Adding wards is a band aid fix for the major underlying issues of the housing system. Instanced housing would solve the problem, but some people will practically spit in your face if you suggest it.

Actually the issue didn't exist until they allowed individuals to buy houses. Before then gil was much harder to come by and only FC's could purchase plots. They started allowing individuals to buy houses because the wards back then were mostly unpurchased. While i tryed to find a plot this week i met several fcs that still couldnt get a plot. I think their should be way more wards. It cant be that the server population is 3-4 times than the max number of all plots and players and fcs have to share this limited amount of plots together.
I know this issue exsits since release and that isghard will add a few more plots but its still not enough by far. Also i think FCs should be given prority when a plott is free or make it possible to convert a private house into an FC house. That would atleast solve the issue for some FCs.
IIRC, wasn't personal housing originally touted as being something separate, and then they ended up just adding it to existing wards?
not really sure, has been a while but i believe the answer would be yes*
*subject to change, no promises, we aren't so sure ourselves right now
what i AM sure about however, and thats one of the things that show how important context can be is that "when it happens houses will be "much more affordable" . people took this to mean player housing would be cheaper, when in fact prices stayed exactly the same. however, their original statement was in fact still true. when player housing became avelable these prices in fact were "much more affordable" to the general player base than back when housing was introduced, even if that wasn't what they originally meant the circumstances around it changed, which in turn influenced how housing (or pricing in particular) was handled

Initially, from what I remember, it seems to me it was supposed to be FC's only. But some plots were still available and they opened them to individuals (I got my mansions -lost since- at this time, a few weeks later, the time to make gils).
We weren't supposed to lose house either (and that's why I bothered to make gils and purchase some housing items at this time).
And finally, we end with the current system that is a mess considering QoL.
They have almost everything they need to make some kind of Wildstar-like housing (except the outside -but since they created a lot and a lot of buildings, it can be changed-) but keep the system as it is.
It sounds to me they never considered housing seriously. But when we need a break from roulette routine, social time in a nice housing as it was in Wildstar is a good reason the keep sub active. Now when I'm bored from the game, I unsub, often for several months.
We could have a Haukke Manor, a Titania castel (or at least visit her from time to time), a pirate island...there are so mnay kind of place and aesthetics possible and we only have some kind of dormitory district. How sad.

Personal Housing
While I cannot give a specific date on when personal housing will be implemented, I can say that prices will be completely separate from free company housing, and, naturally, far more affordable.
Personal housing will be far more affordable than free company housing.
Offsite interviews:
Housing is permanent unless you choose to demolish it to recover some of the gil spent.
Followup early 2014 (no official english translation):
"RMT is the reason we didnt add cheap player housing". "We said cheap so people wouldnt think they couldnt afford it. When we said it, we didnt know how much player housing would cost". "Player housing is a thing because FC creation is lowering and plots would go empty".
Patch 3.1:
Housing demolition timer added.
Thank you! I guess I wasn't searching far enough when I was trying to find this. I definitely remember the bit about them saying they wouldn't tie keeping your house to an active subscription like some other companies do (Hah!), but was evidently foggy on the personal housing being separate.Things Yoshi-P has said about housing:

I can only assume that I took their statement that personal housing would have a completely separate pricing structure to mean they were going to be different things all together.

Most people thought that at the time.
Theres more about housing out there, but its not easy to find, given that the only wiki/database that kept changelogs isnt around anymore.
The current wiki has all of 2 reference links for housing info, both for 4.2 stuff. One of the guys that has a full ward on one of the legacy servers has a website with everything catalogued, but I cant find it.

One of the things they talked up a bit in the expansion previews was some personal plot for [translation unhelpful]. We assumed it was possibly a display field for minions, or a plot to do gardening / harvesting type things, but we havent heard anything since then. The point I'm trying to make is if people make a big enough wave about upgrading Apartments the devs might actually look into it over adding new more wards

Sry but i need to complain a little. How can it be that this stupid housing timer allways unlocks in the middle of the night when ppl sleep or early in the morning when ppl go to work. Thats the 3rd time a row where i have seen this. This shit is cleary prefering ppl from other timezones and unemployment ppl. Why cant it be atleast somewhere in the middle of the day or late evening.
