I played LotRO both before and after it went F2P. The quality of the game definitely declined after it went F2P. Not only that, but F2P communities tend to be atrocious. They're filled with hordes of kiddies who have no respect for anyone but themselves.

Making the game F2P would make me quit the game faster than anything they could do gameplay-wise.

I've done my time in F2P mmo's.. and eventually, no matter how good the game, or how well managed the system is.
They always end up as Pay2Win.
Some even have the audacity to offer a subscription service allowing players to gain an exp and gold drop increase on mobs, along with the cash shop full of items with stat boosts and other accessories.
Even myself have succumb to the temptation to spend in the vicinity of $100 a month on subscriptions and cash shop items to attempt to compete at the higher spectrum of the game.
    Not Any Longer.

I came to FFXIV because I was looking to get away from the cashed up elitist prigs and immature 13 year olds that frequent many other games.
    Damn shame they're here too.
Maybe that'll change after SE start charging for subscriptions.

You gotta hate that kind of people, back on my days of playing Ragnarok Online (Free 2 play servers), the "kiddies" were everywhere, and they convinced their "Daddies" to pay for them to get better stuff than me, that usually got my own stuff with effort and endless grinding and boss hunting T.T... those days sucked for me.

But well that kind of people are everywhere, it's like trying to punch water, no matter how much you hit the water, it will always stay there :/

totally agree, cept the part that the kiddies only respect themselves, if they respected themselves they wouldnt act like trolls

I like the early GW method better. Play for free, paid expansions.

Ive played a few games that are f2p

DDO i joined in after its changed, honestly, it has so much locked content it was hard to play it for free....if not imposible unless you psent 500+ hours getting "points" by creating new characters over and over and doing starter quests so you could unlock the paid areas for free. Sorry thats just horrible.

Champions, I played this before it went f2p, it was a game notirous for its cash market while being p2p....what people never realized is that its cash market was 100% cosmetic before the change! Of course now with all the changed, f2p as it is, it isnt as bad as some others are with advantage selling, but they do exist(and honestly they are 100% worthless compared to other games, cuz they didnt lock out the ability to level to the end like many of the others did)

but yes, in the end, the worst part about f2p games is the fact you can buy yourself to the top, rather then earn it. and most of them do this.
the secret behind why it works is that, you can have a p2p game and have 100k subs at 1.5mil earned per month
or you can go f2p, have 10k people still subbing to it for 150k....yet have a 1mil+ playerbase spending more then you woulda made on p2p, just cuz tis f2p and they are roped in by that term

Monthly sub games are so much better in every way IMO. Micro-transactions act as a deterrent to overall experience and reasons to play a game.
