Max Level Materia (Materia VIII etc) request

    Current:

"Cannot be melded onto a piece of equipment past the first advanced materia slot"

    Suggestion:

"Can only be melded into an empty materia slot."

    or:

    "Cannot be over-melded."

A friend of mine just taught me that Materia VIII can indeed, go past the first literal slot on a piece of gear. The way the tooltip reads makes it sound like the very first slot on an item is the only slot that can hold a Materia VIII, IE, you can only have 1 per piece.

    Hu?

    Nothing wrong with the tooltip.
It says 'advanced materia slot'. Not 'only one materia per Item'.

What you're suggesting is a nerf. Advanced melding is Overmelding and you can overmeld 1 piece of Grade VIII and none in the further overmeld slots.

A clearer tooltip would be something "can only be overmelded once per piece of equipment"

Yes, those circles are normal melding slots. The advanced ones are the melds after those circle slots.
so there is nothing wrong with the tooltip

The tooltip is fine if you understand the difference between materia melding and advanced materia melding.
Which, granted, is a small detail that'll probably fly past most players.

That, or they could explain it better in-game, or something.

I'm not suggesting a nerf, it just sounds weird the way they worded it, and nothing in game CALLS them that.

"Advanced Materia Slot" ... and I'm looking at my items and all the materia slots an item has look the same. So the logic goes "Okay so all materia slots on all items look the same, maybe they're all called that?"

Maybe what they could do, is for example an item has 1 materia slot... they could put the 1 materia slot there, and then put 1 red materia slot there to denote that one Can take an overmelded materia?

Or, yes, "Can only be overmelded once per item" would work too.

But those can be overmelded more then once, up to 5 materia in total to be precise. just grade 8 and grade 6 can only be melded in the guaranteed slots that give 100% and the first slot after that.
Materia's grade 1-5 and 7 can be melded up to the fifth slot.
The catch is, only the 100% slots are visible as slots on gear.

The tomestone and dungeon gear can only be melded up to the visible slots

Items that you can meld materia too have one or more materia open holes, and then a number of "invisible" non-open holes up to a combined max of 5
As in, if the item has one open hole, it also has 4 non-open holes and if an item has 5 open holes, it has no non-open holes.
If an item has no materia holes to begin with, it can't be melded or advanced melded.
Keep in mind, that all of this was explained in the quests to learn Meld and Advanced Meld skills, although it was in golblin speak :/

There are two different types of Melds:
    1. Materia Meld = You put a materia in an open hole in the item
    2. Advanced Materia Meld = You put a materia into an item's non-open hole slot which also doesn't have an open hole empty. As in, if you want to Advanced Meld an item, you must first fill up the visible open holes via Materia Meld.
Of the things that can be melded, there are two types:
    1. Advanced Melding Forbidden = You can not put any materia into any non-open holes, only meld into open holes
    2. All other meldable items = You can do a combined meld of up to 5
There are two different types of materia:
    1. Materia with no restriction in the Description = You can meld as many of these into non-open holes as you wish, not exceeding a combined total of 5 melds on an item
    2. Materia with Description note "Cannot be melded onto a piece of equipment past the first advanced materia melding slot" = You can only meld one into a non-open hole

Melding goes by the above steps in order to determine if a meld is possible given the item and the materia to be attempted.
If the item and the materia used for the attempt pass each step, then you a 100% success rate to meld on an open hole and a lesser chance of success to advanced meld on a non-open hole, of which diminishes too much lower percentage chances of succeeding based around the further into the non-hole slots you are attempting and the level of the materia used (higher level materia = lower chance of success).

As to your issue, the tool tip is correct, but could be worded slightly different as you can advanced meld one VIII materia into any one of the non-hole slots, not necessarily only in just the first non-hole slot.
As in, on a two open hole item with no advanced meld restrictions, you can meld and advance meld:
    1. VIII
    2. VIII
    3. VII
    4. VII
    5. VIII
Although, that 5th slot will be a very very very low chance of success due to the materia's high level.
This is why it is much more common, for the above item's example, to put your advanced melded VIII in slot 3 and then VII into slots 4 and 5, as overall your percentage chances of a successful advanced meld for each is a bit higher.

Lastly, both VI (Stormblood expansion max level materia) and VIII (ShB expansion max level materia) are the only ones having the "Cannot be melded onto a piece of equipment past the first advanced materia melding slot" restrictions, the rest of the materia do not have the restrictions.

NOTE: I did not touch on the item level to materia level restrictions, but that is just basically "You can meld a materia to an item as long as the materia's level is at or below the item's level", so no melding Materia Level 420 VIII into Item Level 50 gear.
Also, if the stats added by a materia exceed the item's cap on that stat, the amount over the cap counts for nothing. As in, if an item is capped at 100 on a stat, and you meld to a total of 105, then that extra 5 is not counted.

Absolutely everything in the game refers to it as that.
It's only players that use the term overmeld.

Advanced melding is explained in game when you do the quest "Melding Materia Muchly" with Mutamix to unlock it. There is also an Active Help entry titled "Advanced Materia Melding".

"Overmelding" is a word made up by the English speaking player base, not by Square Enix.
