Which makes me wonder how much of the recreation of Aumarot (not just the dungeon) was already preexisting. IE did Emet-Selch recreate only the people and maybe restored some building or did he create the whole thing from scratch

He layered an illusion on top of the already existing ruins. Thancred mentions that he tried to sneak in through a window into the building Emet was hiding in but that the window was sealed shut, possibly by junk growing on it for years.

Anamnesis Aynder is far away from Emet’s illusion magicked Amaurot yet it’s still standing, albeit covered in coral. I’d imagine Amaurot looks the same beneath the illusion.

I believe we see a bit of the true state of the ruins in the Dying Gasp. Those structures in the background are clearly destroyed tall buildings.
