I hope not.
It would basically be, "Everyone gets a free wedding set" since you just lock tongues with any other member of your LS pretty much.
Imagine this but server wide.

Tons of people faking a relationship in front of the GM's so they can get pimping Tux's and Frilly dresses without being serious about the entire affair. FFXI weddings were big news and an even bigger deal. No one screwed with them and if you did you would likely find yourself ported to Jugner for your efforts by a friendly GM. The percentage of people who would legitimately use the event for its original purpose is outnumbered by those who could just pull a hood wink for a chance to get some rare ceremonial gear.
Let's be honest there are WAY more Straight players then Gay players. By a large margin. It would upset the traditional tone they set in FFXI for the benefit of a small minority of the player base.
Not that there is anything wrong with that lol
However you must admit that the likelihood for abuse is much higher in a virtual setting with clear gain then someone setting up that kind of capper IRL. Some things are just not ready for a video game setting yet.
I dunno, but I really don't think anyone playing FFXIV is really upset that there's already NPCs of all orientations in game. Not to mention inter-species relationships. And the valentine event basically steered in the same direction, free love for everyone.
To be honest, to me it seems like the MMO players are far more likely to tolerate it in game than IRL, simply because they don't have to reaaally deal with it. Besides, not like everyone boycotted Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Skyrim or other single player games out there because of the inclusion of such relationships.
Meh, if they wanna add it, let them. . . . no difference to me. Prolly never going to utilize that option as I don't want to get just anyone to marry me![]()

Incorrect. Many people were displeased with the fact that Dragon Age 2 having a character basically molest you just because you were nice to him. ME3 was overdone as all hell as well.To be honest, to me it seems like the MMO players are far more likely to tolerate it in game than IRL, simply because they don't have to reaaally deal with it. That said, I didn't even know Skyrim had gay relationships. Persona 2, Fable, and New Vegas had them as well, and nobody really cared. If they make the marriage system ridiculously tedious to get into like FFXI, I'd be fine with that. Or they could make it retardedly easy. Doesn't bother me.
I seriously tried to apply for a wedding date with my then girlfriend at the time. They had a lottery system in place to reserve a day that was 4-5 months away, and you usually only had a small chance to reserve that spot. AND if you were the groom or bride, you couldn't reserve! You had to have a 3rd person do it for you. Needless to say, I never got one reserved.
Based on that, OF FUCKING COURSE FFXI placed importance on a silly event! Actually getting it was a triumph in itself! You really think with a system like that, players would dick around at the ceremony?
I think it'd be the only way to make a wedding important in a "Modern MMO". But I still see players on the forums complaining about, "SE, Y U NO MAKE WEDDING EASIER TO GET".
Serious, it was (is?) easier to plan and book a wedding IRL during peak season than it was/is in FFXI.I seriously tried to apply for a wedding date with my then girlfriend at the time. But along a different line of thought, I think adding an plan-your-own-event type area (instanced) where you can choose decorations, music, NPCs, food, etc. would be a good solution to the whole situation. Such a location could be used for everything from birthday celebrations, to LS gatherings, to marriage ceremonies (same sex or not). By doing this SE basically washes its hands and says "it's up to the players to decide what they want to do with the space we're giving them". This way, SE won't have to worry about any backlash for indirectly showing support for same sex unions.
Careful, you might ruin the sanctity of marriage in a videogame.
I don't see why they wouldn't have same sex mariages if they added the system in the game.
Not sure if they would have a full blown event like XI did but who knows it's obviously in the pipeline somewhere farther down the road if it is though.
