Based on that, OF FUCKING COURSE FFXI placed importance on a silly event! Actually getting it was a triumph in itself! You really think with a system like that, players would dick around at the ceremony?

I think it'd be the only way to make a wedding important in a "Modern MMO". But I still see players on the forums complaining about, "SE, Y U NO MAKE WEDDING EASIER TO GET".
Serious, it was (is?) easier to plan and book a wedding IRL during peak season than it was/is in FFXI.

But along a different line of thought, I think adding an plan-your-own-event type area (instanced) where you can choose decorations, music, NPCs, food, etc. would be a good solution to the whole situation. Such a location could be used for everything from birthday celebrations, to LS gatherings, to marriage ceremonies (same sex or not). By doing this SE basically washes its hands and says "it's up to the players to decide what they want to do with the space we're giving them". This way, SE won't have to worry about any backlash for indirectly showing support for same sex unions.
