    You might not be able to equip it (I haven't tried), but I switched GC on one of my characters, and realised the other day that his chocobo is still wearing some of the old GC's barding. So it could just be that it doesn't automatically dequip and you can use it until you equip something else.

    Mixing and matching still works so far as I can tell
    I have a chocobo wearing a mix of Limsa and Gridania barding
