Change from Steam to non-Steam account?

My friend has a legitimate Steam copy of the game and a Square Enix account.

But she recently bought a new computer and is totally unable to get onto Steam now. I've tried to help her but Steam just refuses to accept her password.

Can she just download a game client and have it install or somehow change her account from Steam to non-Steam? She'd even be willing to buy another copy of the game as long as she doesn't lose her characters.

Unfortunately there is no way to do what you are asking. A steam version and a pc version can't both be registered on the same mogstation account. She got the game on steam, she can only ever play it on steam. No other option without making a new account entirely, which would of course mean starting over in the game completely.

Only choice to not use steam is to play on PS4 instead. Would be able to keep all her characters then.

Sadly they made the choice to lock accounts to Steam if you make the mistake of buying that version of the game. It's stupid as all hell. Your friend's best bet is to try to go through Steam support to work out the issue.

No, this has been a major gripe for YEARS among some of us Steam players. We want off, but they won't let us off even if we're willing to buy another license of the game. You would literally have to create a new service account and start over from scratch if you want to get off Steam. But you'll lose EVERYTHING doing that.

You can access the Steam version of the game via the Windows client by right clicking your Desktop Shortcut -> Properties and adding -issteam to the Target line.

She needs to do Password Recovery on Steam, and if that somehow locks her out, she'll need to contact Steam directly to fix the issue.

I really wish SE would add a big warning that says "THE PC VERSIONS (Steam and Retail) ARE MUTUALLY EXCLUSIVE AND CANNOT BE CHANGED AFTERWARD, USING THE STEAM VERSION REQUIRES A STEAM LOGIN, SUPPORT CANNOT HELP YOU CHANGE IT LATER" when you goto make your account on a PC Platform.

So many people make this mistake and thankfully I reliased the error on a trial account.

(If password reset doesn't work) Can your friend log into Steam via a browser like Chrome or Firefox (so not the client)?
