While parts of the OP's post seem very nitpicky, most mentors I have met use the status as an excuse for everything.
"I can say this stuff I'm a mentor" "As a mentor I can get you banned" oh the things you see out and about in this world we call FFXIV.
If a mentor actually says that, I'm pretty sure that would be against TOS under threats - even though it is a hollow threat, still could be defined as one, thus be a reportable offence.

I doubt people actually go up to mentor for advice.
I think about this a lot, especially as a relatively new player to this game. Why are commendations able to be given to anyone, even if they do not contribute anything in terms of communication? Seems like most people get commendations based purely on playing a tank or healer class (not that I don't think that merits some form of recognition in certain types of content). Is there no way to program something in that opts for a commendation to be given to someone if say, for example, they wrote something into chat?
But then again, maybe I am just assuming the commendation is for good communication and not taking into account actual performance. Someone mentioned earlier that they had 5000 commendations but can still be toxic to other players regardless of a mentor badge or not. Just seems like commendations are kinda pointless in regards to "mentoring" and are something to farm for achievements, mounts, etc. Seems like if there is to be some sort of evolution of the "mentor" title that it can't be (in it's current state) restricted to some arbitrary thing like commendations or volunteered for. I only kind of care about this since, as a newer player, it really sucks dealing with "mentors" that don't provide any information about the game. I have to go outside of the game through discord, youtube videos, etc to answer one basic question.
I don't know what to expect, I played wow and it was like this as well. Just airing my grievances and saw this thread.

People ask questions in Novice Network all the time.
Rarely does anyone physically go up to another player character for interactions beyond a trade.
Commendations are for whatever you want, there's no guidance to them provided. Comm the tank/healer for allowing you into the place. Comm the DPS that actually does their rotation. Comm the tank that steals the LB at the last moment because the DPS was just going to waste it as a finisher anyway. Comm the one that actually says "Hello!" and "Have a nice day!" in your dungeon even though no actual communication is needed as everyone has been there 800 times already.I think about this a lot, especially as a relatively new player to this game. The power is yours. This is also why it's not really a good measure of competency but more of compliancy.
I'm 99% sure you misunderstood their point. It's in the eyes of others they are toxic only because of the crown.

Honestly, the mentor status needs to mean nothing, rather than mean something (and in meaning nothing, it will go back to meaning something).
What i mean is, there should be no rewards attached to being a mentor, no roulette, etc... If someone is a mentor, they should do it to simply be a mentor. Put on the crown because you want to be helpful; but (many) people don't go for mentor to be helpful, they shoot for it because there are tangible rewards for becoming one and use it for those rewards.
Now, does every mentor do this? Of course not, we only tend to remember the people that rub us the wrong way and not the people that don't get in the way of our day; but it seems to come up enough to see that there are at least a good subset of mentors that are starting to ruin this for the rest of them.
I have to respectfully disagree since the next paragraph is about how they dislike single pulls, as if aggro is the only thing that matters when trying to clear certain content. I think it would be a fair assumption that what they were trying to say was that commendations are not a good indicator of permitting a mentor badge, especially when those who have tons of commendations can (admittedly) act in a toxic matter.
Regardless, I hope there is some way to monitor and utilize existing (or new) ways of mentorship in content because I just really want help without staring at another monitor LOL
