A friendly reminder about bad links!

Had a player message me today and just want to let others in the community be aware that with the shutdown of the support center in NA to please be aware of suspicious links!!

I got the same message recently as well, but they linked a twitter account and their only tweet was that fake forum thread link on your screenshot.

Both the player and twitter account were reported, the tweet is no longuer here but the account is.

Be careful, don't click any shaddy link shared by other players!

This tell has been going around for around a week or so now at least with slightly different amounts and sometimes has a link to a YouTube video instead. I always hope people are smart enough to recognize clear phishing attempts like these and not fall for it, but unfortunately there always must be some who do otherwise the scammers wouldn't bother trying.

If Square-Enix is going to run a promotion like this it would be advertised through the launcher not in-game. On the off chance they did announce it in game it would only be in the system message when you log in, or possibly (but very unlikely) a system announcement like they do with the Eorzea Live videos. It would never be through a tell, particularly one from someone that doesn't have the GM title in front of their name and in the GM text colour.

I had that same thing happen to me (the tell) on the 27th. Someone in my FC had their account hacked. I found out thanks to a /tell from someone in NN. Luckily for the FC, the owner got on quickly after notification in discord and removed the person from the FC. The guy in question lost a bunch of stuff but got his account back a couple days later. I never followed it and the FC owner told everyone that what occurred was a good reason to have a security token.

I did have several of them these last weeks, with some variations, like asking to go see a Youtube video, search something on Google or go on this fake lodestone link. The sad thing is when you look at the sender character's profile thanks to the search, and see that it is obviously not new accounts created with the only purpose to send private messages to other players, but accounts of real players who were tricked successfully

I keep receiving these /tell. Always from "real" persons (various lvl 80 classes, etc). I hope they do something about it...

Sadly with these fake links and fake websites changing all the time, legal actions would take way too much time and money for no results at all. There is not much SE can do apart from warning people about it. The problem being that tons of players don't bother to read announcements, even the ones you get in your chatbox each time you log in.
