you have to awkwardly position your character to aim your line so you teleport the right direction. it's very clunky and annoying.
edit: OP meant to be "Nightmarish" on legacy controls

Just face your camera north, then push left right forward or back. It's super easy.
Also, how are Portal mechanics nightmarish? The control scheme doesn't effect portals at all...

I play on legacy controls and have zero issues with this mechanic. It isn't that awkward and you have time enough to move yourself into position and face the boss again without getting thrown off somewhere.
Just point your camera at where you want to end up then hit left, right, forward or back depending on what debuff you have, its not hard.
Savage Completion Rate ~5%+ of active players. Community: "Ugh stop catering to savage"
Ultimate Completion Rate ~1% of active players. Community: "Ugh stop catering to the hardcore raiders"
Frontline/ Rival Wings/ Hidden Gorge Mount Aquisition ~0.05-1% of active players. Community: "Ugh PVP is so dead in this game, they should stop investing in it"
Blue Mage Morbol Mount Aquisition ~0.01% of active players. Community: "WoW bLuE mAgE iS sO fUn AnD aCtIvE i CaN't WaIt FoR mOrE lImItEd JoBs"
Rotate the camera and point the actual debuff icon arrow at the spot you want to end up, then press forward. It will flick it to the right location even at the last second. The only one that is slightly annoying doing it this way is south. You have to double check the precision afterwards (so you don't end up in the crystals or going off the arena) for south as the camera will be angled in a way after you press forward where you can't see where the telegraph is going to precisely end up without rotating the camera again but other than that it is pretty painless.
I use Legacy controls (with both options selected) and have no issues with it. When the Away From Me move shows up I use one ability on the boss to figure out which direction I'm heading when facing the boss. This direction is fixed no matter where I am on the platform since the boss doesn't move. I then move to a location where that puts me in the right spot, continue to fight the boss and forget about it. Legacy controls won't have anything to do with it since they only affect movement control, not positioning.
It sounds like you are trying to handle the mechanic wherever you happen to be instead of adjusting your position to accommodate it, so I would suggest doing the latter instead.
As for the portals... What is nightmarish about them? Legacy controls do not affect camera rotation which is what you use to determine where to stand, and once there you only have to worry about sidestepping in a couple of directions. You don't even need the camera angle at that point anymore, since you get all of the information you need from the initial portal set up.

This isn't the first mechanic that involves your characters facing position.
I've been using Legacy controls since well... 1.0 I guess technically.
You get used to it.

I find these sorts of mechs easier on Legacy controls... which is why I have it set as such. Positioning your character is what the mechanic is about surely?

Yea it’s all about the character position and not about the camera...while this mechanic is lame it’s not difficult, you just gotta turn your character the right direction. Like halicarnasus but more stupid lol
