    FFXIV FanFest Q&A - Character Models

    Hi there, I asked the question during the FF FanFest Q&A regarding going back and polishing the existing character races.

    I used elezen as an example and have screen shots that show the issue regarding the odd modeling in their necks. Here is an ablum of it:

    I’d like to stress Elezen isn’t the only race that could use a little love to their models. I’m currently working on grabbing some screen shots of other models that have odd issues but if anyone else has any examples to provide of odd character model problems I would encourage you to post them so they can “positively look into it”! Thanks!

    The races themselves are generally fine, but definitely could use some fine tuning especially when it comes to clipping, whether it be horns, ears or hair. Beyond that, we need a better character creator, at least imo. While we have a modest amount of options, our characters are basically stuck at PS3 levels of detail. That should, imo, change sooner rather than later. When f2p games do it better, something is wrong.

    While I cannot give a specific date on when personal housing will be implemented, I can say that prices will be completely separate from free company housing, and, naturally, far more affordable.

    I definately agree with you. I don’t want to see full reworks for sure but there are definately some places they could use a little tweaking and polishing

    I'm actually quite dissatisfied with the answer Yoshi gave. It always stems as "this will be too hard to do".
    Indeed it is, however you're making entirely new races. Why not focus on what we have already?
    I'm not asking for a complete over haul and have BDO customization, but a little updating can go a long way.

    On another note, Elezen necks always give me a good chuckle.

    I think that I may have confused them by giving the elezen example and they may have thought I meant just elezen in general when I was talking about all the races. I probably could have worded my question better haha.

    Most race stuff only really pertains to the gear above the neck, hence the problem with the Elezen models is that very specific cases make them look very wrong. With Lalafell, a lot of stuff was simply made for their models to begin with since they're chibi, but it's a bit careless when their arms clip through everything.

    With the Miqo'te and Au Ra models, tail clipping is VERY obnoxious, especially in clothing that was clearly meant to be a cape with physics, and is instead stiff. Then there is clipping tails through mounts. I don't buy "too hard" for this. Clipping issues are an intentional design disregard that could have been at least taken into account when the gear was originally designed (eg with capes) or just put tail cut-outs on the gear that would otherwise look ridiculous. They existed in 1.0 gear.

    Few people actually know how the models are built, but some very pertinant details about how they're assembled can be found online, and it kinda just breaks down to "they could have made them more complicated, but chose not to in order to make them look better (how face, nose and eyes are assembled.)

    i can give some insight into why it may be difficult to adjust the models, and thats they would need to make the adjustment to the model, and then theyd need to look through every animation elezen have access to in the game to make sure that adjustment didnt break a keyframe and cause something silly like now the elezens neck 'joint' is below a rotational point and the head is upside down or inside the torso, then once they have that then they have to check all the armors that have stuff around the neck to make sure exactly what happens to the lalafells with their lack of shoulders doesnt now happen to elezen with stuff around their neck, and these checks would need to be made every time they have to go back and adjust it because lets say they adjust it and now the darklight tin can the head is halfway into the chest, they have to adjust the darklight, they now have to make sure that adjustment didnt break the top for all the other races, so hopefully you can see how it could be a very long and involved process to fix the elezen neck and lalafell wierdness even though to most people it looks like a very easy thing to fix

    Anyone instantly see a trapezoid when scrolling by the lala... XD?



    A new "it's 2018 #currentyear" character creator would be really cool though, I'd love to see new options and sliders. Although I can't imagine the amount of work it'd take to make sure no one's character looks different (at least in a non-improvement sort of way), but also change the model system to work like that lol.

    I really like the dhalmel pictures at the end though.

    if youve played SC6, mitsurugis tree trunk of a neck is hilarious once you notice it, guess everyone in SCs world is part elezen >P
