Greetings!
As an opener:
altruistic |ˌaltro͞oˈistik|
adjective
showing a disinterested and selfless concern for the well-being of others; unselfish
History/Intent
Created sometime in Spring of 2011, merged with Materia Lies linkshell around December of 2011.
I founded Altruistic Knights a few months after game launch for many reasons, chief among them was to foster a kind, helpful, while still skillful kind of environment that included all of its players. Although this idea is easy to put down on paper, I found it to be difficult to execute.
In both XI and XIV linkshells I've been in, I found myself in this paradox: as a new player, you tend to get sidelined or 'benched' while the senior players go off and clear the path, but in order for you to become senior, you have to participate, which can be very hard to do, because you are new. It can be very frustrating trying to force your way into the 'in' crowd of an established linkshell, and let's face it, not all players are that assertive.
As a leader, I've always been incredibly involved with ensuring, over anything else, that the linkshell is healthy and fun! Cliché as it is, fun is such a critical element to a game, especially one that is so heavily dependent on teamwork and cooperation. That being said, it is my on-going mission to ensure that no player gets left behind or neglected, and that we have a kick-ass time in Eorzea.
Schedule / Time
AK is primarily PST centric, with many players from EST joining in during late nights (typical event times or times when most active are between the hours of 5PM PST ~ 11PM PST). We have a loose schedule currently in place: SUN / TUE / THUR. Like many other linkshells, we've no set time frame in place - if there are enough to form a run, we run.
Events
Everything the game has to offer. Recently we've been hitting Cutter's Cry (a few wins in already), started Aurum Vale this week (win should be by week's end) - EDIT: got our win in last night actually, as a result of some minor tweaks to our approach, and got numerous drops, including darklight boots! - as well as the older content (Ifrit, Moogle, Darkhold, World NMs, Strongholds, Spiritbond/EXP). Something of note around events is during scheduled event nights, you are more than likely going to participate. Save for the leader or two to actually lead the event, leaders or more active players tend to have less priority, (willingly! mind you) because we're just awesome like that. I will personally sit out on events to ensure spots are open for those who can't raid every night of every day of every week. Rest assured we are not the type of linkshell to work off 'merit points' or 'seniority status' or 'attendance' of any kind.
Participation/Invitation
Historically, AK is very conservative with inviting members. We tend to shy away from blind invites in favor for players that at least a few of us are confident in bringing into the linkshell.
That being said, our invitation model is as follows: run with us a couple of the nights, make sure to interact with at least 3 out of the 5 leaders (we're on very often) and show some willingness to participate and show some skill. If lacking in the latter, show some willingness to learn and improve your skill.
We are more than willing to take the time out of our day to teach/coach/spar, but you need to show decent signs of competency and improvement. This was given serious thought, as inviting blindly without any insight into your skill-level could mean hours wasted if brought to an event, and wasting members' time is not our business.
We are not a social linkshell, we are an end-game linkshell, just with out the douchebaggery.
As a member, it's absolutely acceptable for you to be active in other linkshells, however we are expecting your participation on scheduled nights.
We discourage players that log in just to ask for resources. Friendly as we are, our resources are reserved for own, and should not be taken advantage of.
Dynamic
Just a quick note about the linkshell dynamic. We discuss everything, from how the Packers beat the Suns during the Stanley Cup with a bicycle kick on the 18th hole - or sports for those of you who aren't familiar with what I was just talking about, to cars, music, movies, cupcake type pastry things, other video games, computers, food, all that jazz (jazz included), as well as constantly discuss all the new game changes and mechanics (spell casting, positioning, abilities, effectiveness, weapons, alchemic items, food items, materials, synths, etc.)
We are a self-sustaining linkshell, but to tap into our resources, you'll need to be dedicated and loyal knight, not just any geek of the street; gotta be handy with the steal, if you know what I mean. Earn your keep!
We use teamspeak mostly for our events, but also use it often to just be lazy and not type. A few of us have game parsers set up to gauge player effectiveness (we are not crazy Nazis about this, but as I alluded to earlier, we do still strive to be on top of our game and skillful in all that we do).
We employ guildwork to meet our website needs, but may switch platforms to a different hosted tool.
tl;dr?
