Here's a proposed retainer / MB UI someone else suggested. All retainers in one window, no tedious opening and backing out..
Just click the retainer you want to deal with and it's inventory shows up in the same window:

I have a controller attached to my PC for two purposes - retainers and fishing. The same retainer menus that are tedious and annoying on KBM simply fly through with the controller, to the point where the messages have to flash for 20 seconds on the screen afterward because I went so much faster than they would display. (I also tried using the controller for gathering, but when flying between nodes it feels more efficient to KBM after all....)

It's a reminder that this game was built to be accessible by console players, and a lot of UI decisions are made for them, not for the PC players.
