Think we will get a Final Fantasy XIV-2 in the future?

It has been in the back of my mind lately; from what has been said from the developers themselves over the years regarding what this game could, would, and could not do that I wonder if eventually will get a brand new MMO that continues FFXIV but with all the issues addressed that they couldn't address with the original FFXIV that they been wanting to do for years.

Or will FFXIV eventually end soon? I know they wanted to wrap up the current storyline, but they expressed interest in doing another new storyline after it?

Considering how long XI has been going on for, I don't think XIV is in any danger of dying off soon, especially when we've only seen a small fragment of Hydaelyn's continents so far.

Especially when the game only continues to gain mainstream traction with each passing month. FFXIV is doing quite well for itself right now and has found a devoted enough fanbase to keep playing it for awhile yet. And if we look to WOW as an example, even after the game starts making misstep after perceived misstep the sunk cost fallacy will likely keep it alive for a lot longer than that.

To add to this, the lore considering Hydaelyn's existence in relationship to other worlds is still vague. So far, we've only ever seen details on the original world and the sundering in any amount of detail, but some lore elements (the Omega weapon 'hailing from another star', Midgardsormr coming from another star, the continuous referencing of all 13 shards and the source as simply 'this star', etc) indicate that even more worlds exist, completely unrelated to the source.

Vague lore = undefined lore = room for expansion.

Either the devs are gonna kill this game or a lack of popularity will, but it will not be a case of no more room for expansion.

They won't be ending FFXIV any time soon.

Though, most likely the reason for it ending will be due to how annoying it'll get having to work with the spaghetti code and all the limitations it imposes on the devs.

Even then, it'll probably continue on in a sort of maintenance mode, so long as people will play it.

As for a new FF MMO, be it XIV-2 or otherwise... That will depend entirely on whether SE deems it potentially lucrative enough to sink the vast amounts of money that creating an MMO from scratch requires. Which, given how XIV 1.0 turned out, probably makes them a little more cautious about greenlighting MMO's.

How likely they will consider it is hard to say, but they already run XIV under less than its potential because they want to earn maximum profits off it meaning that the devs have to be really critical about what they spend time and money on developing (Including spending their own free time, as was the case for the few Viera and Hrothgar glasses and stuff). Otherwise, if given free control and a higher portion of its earnings to spend, its possible that they could have a team (Or teams) working on rewriting the code in order to make "XIV-2" without having to completely start the game over from scratch.

The game was rewritten from the ground up when ffxiv 2.0 launched. Stop with the spaghetti code garbage.

    No it wasn't lol.

It was created based on the 1.0 systems. The devs have literally said that themselves.

It's also the reason why various systems exist in the game, such as how combat functions, how the character creation functions, how inventory functions etc.

Unless you believe it's possible to completely code an entire MMO from scratch in only a single year, which is laughable, when most games are in development for several years before release.

Actually, you're wrong, they scrapped the old 1.0 engine (Crystal Tools) (and 1.0's code completely), and built ARR in an entirelly new engine based on FFXV's Luminous Engine, there is no old '1.0 code' in the game, the game does reuse certain assets like certain enemy and character models and gear/equipment, but they're rendered in the new engine and are not just copied and pasted into ARR. 1.0 character data is also transfered into ARR but that is simply little more than a database with a bunch of flags assigning values at character creation and is again, not 1.0 'code' copied into it.

Being 'based' on 1.0's systems doesn't mean it reuses 1.0 code, that's just a myth that has reached silly meme status and annoys me everytime I see someone use it. It's one meme I wish would just die out already. ARR's limitations simply come by design, the game was designed in a hurry as a way of restoring trust with players and FF fans after 1.0's disasterous launch, and that meant having to skip or put aside certain 'fluff' aspects like glamour for later, in order to get the core systems of the game working properly and stable at launch (something 1.0 never had). Unfortunately this meant ARR was designed as a 'closed system' somewhat that has been difficult to adapt and upgrade as time has passed and the game has grown in popularity.

Hence the work-arounds and compromises Yoshi and his team have had to use to implement requested features added later like glamour - he would implement stuff like a proper 'glamour book' system for instance if he could, but due to the aforementioned closed design, it's something that can not be done.

They still program XI using a PS2 dev kit emulated on a PC. It still needs players to log in to PlayOnline.
    Yet they carry on.

XIV can't be as bad as that.

I kind of expect it to end when we get to level 100 (in other words, two more expansions), then go into maintenance mode like XI. I sincerely hope it doesn't just drag on forever like WoW.
