Latest patch downloading at 19 b/sec to 135b/sec. The first six months of the game I had to switch to another bit torrent program to download the updates then It went ok for a long time till today.

Isn't it about time Final Fantasy 14 deserved a better launcher?

I personally have only had an issue with the launcher just once. I think my dl speeds were very slow, yet my upload speeds were over 500k/s. I exited the launcher and tried again....and it downloaded just fine. I have heard of others that have had the same issue time and time again and i must say the only issue i see really is......impatience. i do not mean that as a jab at you, so please do not take it that way. I understand that different players have different varibles that come into play in situations like these. What i find funny tho... is that people use torrent programs to dl the updates.....but the launcher program itself is a torrent program lol

Forward FFXIV's ports and you should be golden. Never used another program to download and have always downloaded at my connection's high to max speed.
