What if you DO pay someone else's sub?

You know the old saying "you don't pay my sub"? meaning you can't tell a person how they want to play and enjoy this game...

Well what if you DO offer to pay their sub? Are you then allowed to tell them how to play? Telling them what glamours to wear etc... lol

I mean, I think it depends on how/why you're paying their sub?

If I go out for lunch with someone and they buy me a sandwich, and then I start to eat the sandwich and they're like "I bought that sandwich, so before you can eat it you have to take the ham out, roll it up, and stick it up your nose." I think we'd all look at them like they were nuts. It wasn't part of the terms. ("I am altering the terms. Pray I do not alter them further.")

But if they say, "Hey, I'll buy you a sandwich, but if I do, you have to take the ham out of the sandwich, roll it up, and stuff it up your nose", then it's on me if I accept those terms; I either buy my own sandwich or I end up with pork-nostrils.

This made me realize that technically in WoW, if you sell game tokens on the AH you are paying other players' subs.

I can relate to this because I have a friend who's sub I do pay whenever he doesn't have money, which isn't that rare, so I'll give that perspective.

I'm a pretty endgame focused player. I do what SE terms "high end" content, I care about optimizing my rotation, having good gear, having buffs/food, etc etc. Even when I'm doing something like alliance raids or ex roulette, I may well be watching my numbers and trying to improve them.

This friend never steps even into extreme primals. His rotation/DPS output is very poor, but he does at least try to execute mechanics correctly (and sometimes fails repeatedly and badly, but he tries). But, he has fun, and he likes the low pressure of "casual" content. Often times doing things like NG+ rather than pushing content. And IMO? That's just fine. If I tried to push him into being a savage raider or "get at least this percentile or I'll never help you out again" or whatever... well first he wouldn't have fun, and second I feel like that would make me into an a-hole. And maybe he would decide "Playing with Ris isn't fun anymore, I'll go ask someone else or just do without FF14 for a bit."

So as a pragmatic issue it gives you leverage to twist someone's arm, but then you're twisting their arm, you see?

With all that said, I've never even once seen "You don't pay my sub" used by anyone seriously/unironically.

I actually have a few weeks ago in a thread about parsers. They seemed to think that only a person who pays their sub has a right to make any comments about them.

Granted it's rare to see someone being serious about it, but apparently some do take that statement to heart.

As for paying someone else's sub...

...if you pay someone else's sub and then force them to play in a certain way when they're doing nothing harmful, then you're a crappy person.

If you paid someone's sub upon the agreement that they would, for example, help your raid team, and then they decide not to, then that is different because they broke an agreement that was in exchange for the sub.

You can tell someone anything you want.

They don't have to listen to you if you're paying their sub or not.

However, if you use the fact that you're paying their sub to make them do something they otherwise wouldn't do (I.e. "If you don't do this, I'll stop paying your sub"), that's coersion.

Idk about sub, but if someone paid for your Tonberry knife then I would say you should take their imput on how you should play or act into consideration.

They aren't shallow enough to be bought off anyway. Even subs have their pride.

As far as paying someone's subscription to a game. The only thing IMO you should be able to ask of them is that they let you know when they don't plan on playing the game so you aren't paying to keep an account active when it's not being used.
