Stay away from the mentor chat for you will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy.

I'm just finishing my first month in ffxiv, and is, by far, the most friendly mmorpg I ever played.

Ppl is nice. Playing mainly with AST, and every time I ask for help with first time mechs or something else, team mates just stop for a while and answer everything I need to know, either mentor, veteran or just newbie ones that know what to do.

I'm soo happy with this, comming from other games that community turned toxic as hell.

I am very sorry to hear that you had such a bad experience in the Novice Network... It is sadly but true that NN is not the best place to get info for novices or for anything else, which is pretty ironic when you think about the name of the chat. Of course mentors should answer you in a respectful manner and help you as best they can, if you have a genuine question about something. I also do not think that this should be normal mentor behavior, and I don't think anybody should accept it either. Granted you did reply back and were passive aggressive in your response, which is not something I would recommend.., my advice is not to be passive aggressive in return and just leave, report these people for abusing the mentor status, and maybe even for harassment (and I am not saying that lightly either). I do not defend precious touchy snowflakes either.., if you can't handle the fact there exist people who might say or do something that were not intended to be offensive or malicious but you find them to be because of reasons.., you probably should just stay off the internet and online games in general. But back to the topic.., I have a mentor status, and I would never replied to you like that. I would never reply in a bad manner regardless of circumstance, because mentors are supposed to show by example, not only to how you do thing in the game, but on how we communicate to each others as players. Unfortunately toxic people exist everywhere and in every mmo, and I hope these instances do not cloud your judgement of the game. There are many good people in this game and they should not be hard to find, but if someone is being a douche for no good reason and at least if you are not a douche you should just stay away for them, probably blacklist them and report them if it is really bad.

I too have found FFXIV community to be maybe the friendliest mmo to date, and I speak with many years of experience with this game. I have met many good people, and had some of the most friendliest player interactions in this game. I can pick one from memory I had when I just started to play this game in earnest. I started as Paladin in this game and I had played tank in other mmos, but I didn't know how to properly hold aggro in the beginning. So somebody in the party said that I should use flash at the start of the battle before using the combos and in between my combos. Since then I have never had problems with holding aggro, and I may have stumbled and fell a couple more times, maybe even get pretty toxic reactions at some point if I hadn't gotten this info so early in the game. I don't know how the newbie experience is today compared to when I started, I was maybe even lucky but no one should have players yell at you when you are new to the game and learning the ropes or even asking questions about something because you need directions. Continuing...

That being said I can also share one of my most toxic episodes to round up this reply, and so nobody has to feel alone in the experience of toxic players. I play FFXIV every week with my buddy since I started playing this game, and for this particular instance we did main-scenario roulette. This was right before Shadowbringers so this was also right before the tank stance changes happened. I played off-tank that time and the other tank should have been main-tank, but for some reason this tank didn't use the main-tank stance. We started to die and it quickly became a shit show with dpses and healers running around all over the place because he did not aggro properly. When my buddy asked why this player didn't use the main-tank stance and offered friendly advice to use it and I told about the aggro ability that this player should be using according to the class (assuming that maybe this player didn't know, and I can't remember the class this player was), this tank bark back at us, told us to shut up and said that he didn't want to use it, because and I quote "It is going to disappear anyways, so there is no reason for me to use them". Both me and my buddy was absolutely flabbergasted and I literally had my jaw dropping. I bursted into laughter because I just couldn't believe what had happened. Up until now I have only met a fraction of stupid people in this game and they were not as bad as this. Not only was the reasoning really bad (just because the mechanics change you still have to use the current paradigm of mechanics in order to hold aggro), but the fact that we got this incredibly hostile reaction for simply giving a friendly advice was just stunningly terrible. Never in my days in this game, have I seen such a spectral of hostility and stupidity. ... There are a few more I could tell, but I think you get my point. I don't let these people ruin my experience of the game, especially when I know the are a sea of good people already within this game, and I currently enjoy this game as a whole regardless of the bad that might exist when it comes the the gameplay etc.

As many already said in this thread, I too strongly think that you should reconsider your un-subing from FFXIV because of these instances. You may yet find some good players to play with, on a daily basis or when you log on, maybe some discord servers or some other place.

I don't even remember how many times I asked a question or needed help on the NN chat and mentors didn't know the answer or didn't want to share information (there isn't anything bad about it, but they could just write they don't know it instead of 'use google') and I got help from random players who showed and explained me everything.

Unfortunately, being a mentor in this game means nothing. I hope it will change someday.

To be honest it does not surprise. Some people use the whole Mentor thing just for their own advantages and do not care about helping.

If someone recalls the name of it had they not implemented a thing were people could look for specific groups in game, like a sort of linkshell? I do not know why i forgot the name of it, lol
It is very unfortunate OP if you leave because of a few people's actions but all the best on what you decide.

As a (German) mentor myself, I am often disgusted by the unsocial attitude many of my 'co-'mentors show once it's not about their friends but randoms. Impoliteness, impatience and other 'fun' characteristics can belong to these players just as to any other person, although their mentor-status makes it even worse as they are supposed to be rolemodels.

With that, I wouldn't recommend the NN to anybody since you can never be sure if a crown-wearer is a good guy or an a******. The Internet a ka Google is a better friend for looking up any information than this chat, most of the time. A nice FC / linkshell is also a thousand times more reliable than the network.

    Slightly off-topic:
In case of mentor-me, I have my stupid icon turned off - and only wore the crown when mentor-roulette forced it onto my head. (Am I glad I was done with that a long time ago. x.x ) In my opinion, people should try to properly answer other players' questions no matter the rank or title, since nobody has more or less value than another human being.

Also, as a probably annoying sidenote for you guys:
If I happen to end up these days in an instance with only mentors surrounding me, I often feel the need to activate my title "Mentor of Mentors", since it wouldn't surprise me if these players saw an opportunity to bully a let's-call-it-ordinary-user a ka minority in said dungeon-run. (Yeah, I have several bad experiences with crown-wearers. Thus the awful coward-impulse.)

I know people who farmed ARR trials on healer for easy commendations just to get the crown. Not to be a mentor. Just to get the crown. It's easy and pretty fast apparently.
