Well, that's where you are wrong. Most mentors just want a shiny crown and access to the novice network cuz it's global chat. That's it. They don't actually care about helping. That's why mentors are a literal meme in the xiv universe.
Sure not all mentors are bad, but the good ones are few and far between. You don't ever expect anything from a mentor, and your experience is much better.
Unfortunately, this does go back to the underlying issues with the Mentor system...
Wherein there are actual rewards to be gained by becoming a mentor, that not only don't care how effective a mentor you are, but also decent enough to draw people into the Mentor system just for them.
This creates a system where people become a Mentor, purely for these rewards and not because they actually give a damn about helping other players.
Thus, ironically, it's often NON-mentors that are friendly and helpful. This isn't always the case, as there are still some nice Mentors, but in my experience there's a larger percentage of nice non-mentors than nice mentors.
That said, it sucks that you're moving on. FFXIV has one of the better online communities. It's not perfect, as you have experienced, but I tend to find much less toxicity here than in most other online games.
I do appreciate the feedback from everyone. I should rethink maybe renewing or not and perhaps my first thought was a bit premature.
I'm just unsure if I want to keep supporting a game that allows not only the power to be mean mentors but also their ability to ban people for x amount of time for just simply disagreeing with how a mentor acted. That to me is just the ultimate punch in the proverbial face.
Also, people can kick you out of the dungeon without reason, or maybe there will be a reason, but they couldn't even say it in fear of reports. If something like that made you unsubscribe from the game, maybe you shouldn't play games like this, where people can be negative all the time, so maybe this game isn't for you.I do appreciate the feedback from everyone. If you feel they were in the wrong, take action and report them. Mentors aren't actively monitored as that would require entirely too many staff and manhours....I do appreciate the feedback from everyone. I should rethink maybe renewing or not and perhaps my first thought was a bit premature.

A lot of players got the mentor status because they want to show off that they are a player who knows a lot, or they think having a crown next to their name is cool. There are mentors that genuinely want to be helpful, but there are many who have no interest in it.
You're better off joining a free company or a link shell if you want to find helpful players. The mentor system is incredibly flawed and it often attracts those who want to use it as a platform to feel superior.
FFXIV is probably the most chill mmo I have played by miles. It just so happens many of the not-so-nice people hang around in the mentor chat.
I think the biggest mistake you have made thus far is setting your expectations too high. Not all mentors are bad, but a number (no idea how many and I won't even try to guess) of them aren't in it to help others. They are in it for the rewards and crown. FCs are usually a bit more helpful, and I would say that most people in general are decent enough otherwise. You just need to find the right help. It's out there, you just probably won't find it through the Novice Network.
