FFXIV community is not Novice Network alone.
As for meeting toxic people, that's not FFXIV, that's litteraly everywhere in the world on all kind of game, jobs, situations...
But in general, FFXIV community is good, helpful, understanding.

To be honest, if that *almost* made you quit, then you wouldn't go very far elsewhere, either. No, of course not and I am not "holding the game responsible for the actions of these 2 or 3 mentors" it's the simple fact that it happened and it put a bad taste on the game for me. As in, if this is the kind of things I am going to expect to happen in the future, then I don't feel the need to keep playing.
I suggest that you leave the Novice Network because it's an absolute joke. It's pretty much a rookie mistake to even rely on it. There will be good people, be it from your Free Company, Linkshells or even the forums who are more willing to help you with your questions.
Communities will always have bad apples wherever you go, so be wary if things like these happen again.
I appreciate the feedback but I do think you're missing the point. I am not oblivious to how the world works I know there are bad people out there. The best example I can give is this:To be honest, if that *almost* made you quit, then you wouldn't go very far elsewhere, either.

Just think of giving your money to a business for a service then one day you call customer service for help only to be met with insults by more than one person who indirectly represent that business and then ban your phone number for a half hour.
Would you think twice before giving your money to that business again?
This analogy doesnt work for one crucial reason: You havent called customer service for help.I appreciate the feedback but I do think you're missing the point. I am not oblivious to how the world works I know there are bad people out there. The best example I can give is this:

A better analogy would be that you asked another customer who you thought looked friendly for help and they turned out not to be friendly. When you started voicing your disagreement other customers in the store thought it would be best if you leave for a while and escorted you out.
Now, is it "good" or "right" that this happend? Of course not.
But it has nothing to do with SE and you're actually not giving those mentors anything - they dont get paid, not even in ingame currency (at least not for their work in the NN - they do get some currency for the mentor roulette).
Personally I dont think it is, generally speaking - for most of time interactions with other people are minimal unless you seek them out yourself. I dont know how things look in your servers NN, so it might be a good idea to avoid that, but not the game in general. For certain questions the subsections in the forum are actually often helpful. Your choice, though, obviously - dropping the game because of something that isnt really related to the game itself still seems a bit excessive to me and I'm wondering why you went through the trouble to create a foren account if you decided to leave the game. No, of course not and I am not "holding the game responsible for the actions of these 2 or 3 mentors" it's the simple fact that it happened and it put a bad taste on the game for me. That's not what this is though. This is going to a McDonalds, asking a fellow customer what he would suggest and having that customer and his friends berate you about "Not knowing what you want. LOL."I appreciate the feedback but I do think you're missing the point. I am not oblivious to how the world works I know there are bad people out there. The best example I can give is this:

Then blaming the McDonalds for it.
I do understand what you're saying. Let me rephrase my/your analogy, When you go into McDonalds and you see people standing around with tags that say "Hi, I don't work here but you can approach me for help" and when you do the person is anything but helpful. Then after that you tell the person "You know you're not that helpful" Another person, given the power by McDonalds" to stop you from speaking for 30 mins in the restaurant. Wouldn't ask to yourself? Why would McDonallds let people do that?

A mentor should actually lose their status after poor behavior. Without true oversight by SE this system is garbage. Again, it needs to be shutdown.I do understand what you're saying. I don't buy it. Troll thread. If it actually is true just leave the novice network or report the insulting person with your chat log.
My advice, keep away from the novice network. Although it is intended for helping new players, but half the time people go after mentor crowns as an achievement to wear than actually help folks and you might be met with toxicity.
For the time I was a mentor I saw the novice network represented poorly what the game's overall community is like, which is why I think they need to rethink how mentor status is earned.
I'm well experienced in this game by now as I've played pretty much non stop since beta and I love helping people out, particularly newbies but I don't chase after a mentor crown to do it. I did wonder after seeing how people behaved in the novice network how it represented the rest of the community to new players.
In my experience it has been one of the better communities overall and sorry to hear it was the more toxic side to the community you ended up experiencing.
The thing is, this is not SE's fault. Those mentors that abused their power do not represent SE and FFXIV as a whole. The Novice Network is definitely not customer service, as you're asking questions to customers like yourself.Just think of giving your money to a business for a service then one day you call customer service for help only to be met with insults by more than one person who indirectly represent that business and then ban your phone number for a half hour.
Would you think twice before giving your money to that business again?
