A lot of players got the mentor status because they want to show off that they are a player who knows a lot, or they think having a crown next to their name is cool. There are mentors that genuinely want to be helpful, but there are many who have no interest in it.

You're better off joining a free company or a link shell if you want to find helpful players. The mentor system is incredibly flawed and it often attracts those who want to use it as a platform to feel superior.

FFXIV is probably the most chill mmo I have played by miles. It just so happens many of the not-so-nice people hang around in the mentor chat.

I think the biggest mistake you have made thus far is setting your expectations too high. Not all mentors are bad, but a number (no idea how many and I won't even try to guess) of them aren't in it to help others. They are in it for the rewards and crown. FCs are usually a bit more helpful, and I would say that most people in general are decent enough otherwise. You just need to find the right help. It's out there, you just probably won't find it through the Novice Network.

I've been playing online games for over 20yrs, and there's a pattern I've noticed. Over time, the friendly people eventually become outnumbered by the nasty people. The ones who hate the game so much but wont freaking go away - they drive the friendly players away. FFXIV is heading in this direction as well..

I find it rather hilarious that you need 1000s of commendations to even get to be mentor and people still have experiences like that.

Clearly shows that commendations mean absolutely nothing in that regard.

@OP: I wouldn't unsub over some loudmouth moron. Either you enjoy the game or you don't. Get a nice guild and you can ask all the questions you want, w/o having to worry about some wannabe internet hero.

As someone who has way more than the amount needed. The comms are meaningless, most people avoid the comm requirement by doing the "craft mentor" since its less time consuming.

I dont want to be rude, but... equating the overall state of the game (and its community) with one bad interaction you had (even though it was in an unexpected place and shouldnt have happend) seems incredibly shortsighted to me... so someone was rude - doesnt mean everyone is and sure as heck doesnt mean that the game itself is bad or not enjoyable.

No, of course not and I am not "holding the game responsible for the actions of these 2 or 3 mentors" it's the simple fact that it happened and it put a bad taste on the game for me. As in, if this is the kind of things I am going to expect to happen in the future, then I don't feel the need to keep playing.
