If the game had progress, casuals would cry all day about being "locked out" of the new stuff if they dont have "24hrs every day" to play. And if you skillgate instead of timegate it, these same people will cry all day about this only being "for hardcore players", ignoring the simple fact games like the Dark Souls series sell dozens of copies for every one of FFXIV. But we dont like reality, do we?
Matter of fact is, the game is too easy, and gear has little meaning because the numbers are horribly undertuned on every content release. Outside of SOME savage content in the past, EVERYTHING is released outdated. No new content ever expects you to gear up for it in 5.1 or 5.2 so far. Everything is easily completed in the first week without new stuff. Gear is really only for players not able to play their classes to near potential, so they need to outgear stuff to beat it.
There used to be a point to gear progression = you need it to beat harder stuff. And there used to be a point to getting best gear - it would be required for the next tier of content.
But FFXIV playerbase will, by and large, not be able to cope with such a design. They want everything instantly upon patch release, and a maximum of 2 or 3 deaths are permitted, otherwise its instantly "content for the 1%".
Please, I yearn for the days of Burning Crusade Kaelthas, Black Temple etc. THAT is how you keep content relevant through most of an expansion. You dont give everyone a handout/shortcut every patch to skip all other stuff.
