    PC crashes at random with no errors

    Hello! This issue has been bugging me ever since I've returned 2 weeks ago, after a 1~2 year hiatus. I've tried a number of troubleshooting myself to no resolution, as such, I've decided to seek help in this forum.

    - Problem:
    My PC (Desktop) has been crashing at random without any error code. When it happens, my two monitor will turn black and the fans in my tower will start spinning at max speed.

    At times, I can still hear the game's music but actions cannot be executed as I've tried pressing the arrow and skill keys on my keyboard but the sound of it triggering didn't occur.

    Other times, there will be no audio at all.
    - Frequency:
    If I'm just doing normal quests (non-duty), it usually doesn't happen at all the entire day. If it does happen, it happens only once or twice at most.

    If I'm doing duties, be it DRs, normal dungeons or trials, it will occur some times at random. More frequently in trial dungeons. The most consistent crashing I've encountered is during the Titan fight, after Titan jumps up and stomps on the ground causing an AoE damage. It is after the stomp where my PC will crash.

    It also happened during my fight with the Ultima Weapon at Praetorium, when it "summons" the Titan and it does the exact same animation. Other than that moment, the entire Praetorium fight was stable.

    Additionally, it also crashed twice outside of Garuda's "Howling Eye" dungeon. I had to move to a different area, like back to town, to initiate the trial to prevent it from crashing. The trial fight itself did not crash but it did in the middle of the ending cutscene.

    Other times had been at random with low frequency. Such as during normal duty dungeons, normal quests, trials etc.
    - Attempted Troubleshoot:
    *Not in any particular order.
    1. Uninstall and re-install FFXIV from the official website
    2. Disabled Discord overlay
    3. Attempted to play at max graphic setting
    4. Attempted to play at lower graphic setting
    5. Turn OFF DirectX 11 through the FFXIV launcher
    6. Attempted to play without Discord, MSI Afterburner and Chrome running in the background
    7. Cleaned off all the dusts in my tower (there were barely any in the first place
    - Environment when I'm playing:
    1. Chrome is always running in the background
    2. Discord (Sometimes)
    3. In an air-conditioned room
    4. PC tower is well ventilated
    - Others:
    1. According to MSI Afterburner, the average temperature when playing FFXIV's usually 60~80c
    2. I have no issues playing "Code Vein" and "Jurassic World Evolution" at max graphic setting
    3. Jurassic World Evolution is more demanding in spec than FFXIV

    I'm thinking it might be a GPU issue, but after being able to play Code Vein and Jurassic World Evolution with absolutely no issues, I'm no longer sure. If it really is a hardware issue, I'll gladly have it replaced/upgrade it but it doesn't seem to be the case.

    Would appreciate all the help I can get!

    Good morning and thank you for posting on the Final Fantasy XIV Technical Support Forums.

    Since the GPU fans start running at max speed, it does sound like a GPU-related error. Have you tried doing a clean reinstall of the graphics drivers?

    I'd also recommend trying a clean boot. Simply open the task manager and select the 'Start up' tab. Disable everything here and restart the PC. This will make sure that no background processes are interfering with the game.

    Hi Einmimiria! Thanks so much for replying!

    I've tried what you've suggested, a clean reinstall of the graphic drivers and disabled all start up apps but the issue still occurred today. The problem is still the same, with my two monitors turning black and my tower fan blasting at max speed. I can still hear the game however.

    I was able to play the game for a good 2hrs+ and done some MSQs and Trials (Hard Mode), including Titan, with no issues at all. However, when I played Tam-Tara Croft (Hard), it crashed when I was tanking a mob. After going back into the game though, everything else is smooth sail. Seems like it really is happening at random.

    Are there anything else I can provide or attempt to resolve this issue?

    We would also like to recommend several other troubleshooting steps:

    1) Make sure that your hardware is not overheating and remove any overclocks you may have on your graphics card or processor. Please check that any fans or vents are clear of blocks.
    2) Disable any additional programs that could cause interference with the game itself including chat programs. Also, remove any custom configurations made using graphics driver-level programs.
    3) Turn off Fullscreen Optimizations. Find the executable file for the game (normally found in the install folder), right-click it and select 'Properties'. Under the 'Compatibility' tab, check the box labeled 'Disable Fullscreen Optimizations', then click 'Apply'.
    4) Remove any unnecessary USB or audio devices (controllers, headphones, flash drives etc.)

    Hi Rhaervis! Thanks for the help!

    I've tried all 4 of the above troubleshooting steps but the issue persisted unfortunately.

    1. My fans/vents are clear of blocks and I've not overclocked my graphic card or processor so it should not be overheating.
    2. I've disabled all chat programs and I don't have any custom configurations as everything is in their default state.
    3. I've turned off Fullscreen Optimizations through the listed steps.
    4. I've removed all unnecessary USB and audio devices.

    Another additional troubleshoot that I've done is to disable Window 10's Game Bar as I heard it may fix the issue, but it did not work.

    What happened today: After attempting the above, I tried playing the game again. Around 1 hour into the game, I've started a new trial "Keeper of the Lake" and it crashed during the cutscene of the final boss. The rest of the fight was fine. After a re-log, I've managed to clear the trial as well. I had no issues with the ending cutscene. This is the only trail/duty I've played today.

    Would appreciate any more troubleshooting steps I can try or if the source of the issue is identifiable. ):

    Does the crash happen is one monitor is not being used? Additionally could you try changing the resolution or playing the game in border-less full-screen or windowed mode?

    The thermal throttle limit (default) of that card is 83 C I think. But it should down clock though not crash. If you get an app called GPU-Z there is a Sensor tab, in there is a line called PerfCap Reason. This can display some confusing information, but it can help diagnose some thermal or power issues by indicating WHY the GPU is at a given clock speed (this includes throttling and full speed, which is where it gets confusing). This can be Idle, say, when your on the desktop or any low GPU load task, or VRel which is what you would typically see during gaming and is completely normal. If you saw anything related to temperature then you might be on to something. It's a free download pretty much anywhere, I think Asus may even provide a version. Like any bit of third party software make sure it's from a reputable site, and of course scan it before installing etc etc. Just know that any time we look at graphs such as those displayed in Afterburner, Windows Resource Monitor etc we are not seeing the whole story. The refresh rate on these apps can only be so high before they start to consume a noticeable amount of CPU resources. This means any spikes in clock speed, voltage and yes, even temperature often get missed. That's why GPU-Z and similar software which monitor the PerfCap bit are so useful. Didn't mean to bust in the conversation but hopefully some of my nonsense can help?

    Hey guys! Thanks for all the troubleshooting steps and advices!

    I haven't been able to play much lately so I can't be sure if the issue is fixed or still persisting as it sometimes only crashes once or twice when I play the whole day.

    What I've attempted recently:
    - Uninstall every single Nvidia related app/drivers through Window Setting
    - Reinstall from scratch but skipping GeForce
    - Update the game after the recent maintenance

    Current situation:
    I've been playing these two days after the maintenance and so far, it has not crash on me! That said, I've only played an average of 2hrs per day since the maintenance and as I've just started HW, I haven't been playing trials as well to test it out.

    I have however, played Dusk Vigil and Cape Westwind today and it did not crash on me. As the crashing occurs randomly during duties (MSQ, Trial, Dungeons), I'll still continue to monitor the situation!

    Hey forum!

    I wish I can update this thread with good news, but unfortunately the crashing issue has happened again.

    After the maintenance last week, I've mentioned in my previous post that I've also tried to do a clean uninstall of all my Nvidia drivers/app from my PC through Window Settings. From then, I've been playing an average of 2 hours per day with no issues at all.

    Today, I've been playing since morning, for over 7 hours now, played multiple trials, leveling dungeons and MSQ dungeons. Everything was fine until the cutscene after defeating the boss in "The Singularity Reactor (MSQ)". The scene shows Estinien receiving the eye that the WoL handed over and he was saying something.

    That moment is when the game crashed my PC. What happened was the same, with my PC's fan blasting at full speed, screen turns black and the background music playing. I had to do a manual restart of my PC to actually get anything to work.

    After a restart, I went back into the game and the game restarted the cutscene. Once again, it crashed at the very same scene. The crashing on the same scene happened 3 times.

    However, on the 4th time, I tried to reduce to the size of the game's window to the smallest size it can get before the scene (about the size of a default youtube video? it might be slightly bigger) and it stopped crashing. It's awfully weird and I'm not sure if it's my PC that is causing it or the game?

    Would appreciate any advise!
