I think I stated one of my major headcanons before, probably in another thread, but I keep thinking that Shinryu looks so much like Midgardsormr not just because it's convenient for the whole Omega plotline, but also because Ilberd kept wanting "a Calamity greater than Bahamut", and as Captain of the Crystal Braves, he was likely stationed in Revenant's Toll, staring day after day at the giant draconic remains of Midgardsormr wrapped around the Agrius.

My headcanon is that if the Wol were to ever die Aymeric would be the swiftest to go nab our bodies and just loudly proclaim over the other city state leaders debating who got the right to our funeral that he already nabbed us and that Ishguard would give us the best send off because they have the biggest space that could also accompany dragons. I also feel that Edmont has the best of spies as he almost always seems to just happen to to be just in the area and just happen to have known we were in town. Like he's all hey I'm just an old man and yeah I'm not your dad, but I totally just happened to be in the same part of town and needed to come and see how you were doing and remind you that you can always stop by the manor for a meal.

Gerolt actually wants to be in debt with Rowena.

Since he knows that if an Adventurer ever finds a lost tome about or an actual old legendary weapon, they'll invariably end up talking to Rowena about it. Thus, while being in debt with her means he'll ALWAYS be the first person she goes to when it comes to recreating an incredibly powerful weapon.

Which is better than being left alone where he'll struggle to get inspiration for amazing projects (As somewhat noted by Grenoldt).

Oh another wild shipping theory I have is that somehow Yugiri and Aymeric dated. Any scene they're both in and she's trying to hide he'll go hey shadowalker I see you so why don't you come over and join the conversation. Even when she's already part of the conversation and he joins it she ends up being flustered around him.

The thirteen shards are actually FFI through FFXIII, though not necessarily in order.

I contend that they are in order and here's why: The First (FF1) contains: A Volcano named Mt. Gulg, dwarves, elves, pixies, the Warrior of Light, a subaquatic "palace". Clearly a reference to FF1. Meanwhile, the Thirteenth was bungled and destroyed by arrogance and ineptitude. As Emet-Selch says "In our ignorance, we created a useless void of the thirteenth." A clear repentance.

To add to this, every Calamity matches how the games started in some manner.
1st Calamity (Wind) = FF5, where the journey was started from the loss of the wind
2nd Calamity (Lightning) = FF12, where technology caused the fall of Dalmasca and led to the story's start
3rd Calamity (Fire) = FF2, where the Emperor set fire to the heroes town, starting the journey for revenge.
4th Calamity (Earth) = FF3, where an earthquake opens up a cave leading to the first crystal.
5th Calamity (Ice) = FF6, where the journey starts in the icy region.
6th Calamity (Water) = FF10, where the game starts during a blitzball (underwater sport) match.
7th Calamity (Astral) = FF7, where the game started during the most chaotic and interesting thing you could imagine...an eco-terrorist attack on a facility.

Now look at the possible 8th Calamity of (Umbral). How does FF1 start? With the generic, boring, "Save the princess" quest.

With a prophecy and your team being spat out into a clearing in a forest fairly adjacent to a tower castle city. Who then direct you to save their Princess!

"I thought that my invincible power would hold the world captive, leaving me in a freedom undisturbed. Thus night and day I worked at the chain with huge fires and cruel hard strokes. When at last the work was done and the links were complete and unbreakable, I found that it held me in its grip." - Rabindranath Tagore

There are references sure but there are FF references all throughout the game. I don't think the 'the shards are actually other FF games' fits because they're all reflections of Eorzea. The same base world but with differences from events unfolding differently.
