I think smoking is disgusting, and keep away from it irl as much as possible. I can't stand the smell.
But in game? As long as it's just someone smoking themselves not like, blowing smoke at people like the hearts in the /dote emote, I'd be perfectly fine with it existing even if I'd never buy/use it.
I don't expect SE to ever add it anyway though.

There's already an ashtray furnishing, I don't see why this would a big jump for them. Why not?
And I'm not even a smoker in real life. I say go for it.

I'm fine with a smoking emote in the game. I had the ashtray furnishing in my house (before I switched servers and had to give up my house). I always figured my character was a smoker/alcoholic with all the BS he's been through...
I have a secret to tell. From my electrical well. It's a simple message and I'm leaving out the whistles and bells. So the room must listen to me Filibuster vigilantly. My name is blue canary one note* spelled l-i-t-e. My story's infinite Like the Longines Symphonette it doesn't rest- TMBG Birdhouse in your Soul
A huge THANK YOU!!!! For FINALLY selling the Meteor Survivor Polo on the store. AND a huge thanks to my friend who bought it for me while he was at Fan Fest!!! YES I finally have my POLO!!!
I have sat here staring at my screen for nearly 30 minutes now, trying to articulate a response to those that are against the addition of a simple smoking emote, and I'm honestly struggling to come up with anything.
I've seen other users point out the fact that various NPC's smoke when someone else tried to insist that only villains smoke (when the only villainous character I remember ever smoking was Yotsuyu).
I've seen other users point out the existence of a few housing items like the ashtray and ornamental pipe.
I've even seen other users point out the fact that the ESRB rating for the game itself includes Use of Alcohol and Tobacco.
But no matter what these folks say, no matter what reasons they give in support of a smoking emote, it still receives push-back from people that don't want it. A few with reasons such as "smoking is a gross habit irl", "it would glamourize smoking for younger players", or "FFXIV has a colorful and family friendly aesthetic"...
The game that has a rather unsavory chamber within the very first dungeon, in which an NPC fearfully states that she won't bite anymore is considered family friendly? I'm sorry, I know you're referring to the colors of this game and how it can appeal to younger audiences, but the themes within are very much on the adult side. Between the prostitution and slave rings in Limsa and Ul'dah, the racism against Keepers of the Moon Mi'qote and Duskwight Elezen in Gridania, along with racism towards the Beast tribes in general. That's not even getting into the various horrific things that the people on the source did to one another. Belah'dia using zombie powder on Sil'dih to essentially wipe them off the face of the map and eventually becoming Ul'dah, a city ruled by the Monetarists with the Sultana essentially being nothing more than a puppet to the throne. The three-way war between Black Mages of Mhach, the White Mages of Amdapor, and the Nymian Marines (who were cursed with a fate worse than death by Mhach) which eventually caused a massive Flood of water aspected aether to drown everything. And do I even need to mention the Allag and the Garlean Empire's war-crimes? Or Ala Mhigo's mad king, who in his throes of paranoia during the final days of his rule, had everyone even tangentially related to him killed so they wouldn't usurp his throne?
All of this and more exists within FFXIV, yet it's smoking that get's this kind of treatment? It's honestly laughable to me.
And before anyone asks, no, I neither smoke nor drink IRL, but you won't see me condemning others that do.

Have people ever considered that SE just don't want the player character to smoke. Setting aside "think about the kids," Final Fantasy appearing "family friendly" or whatever npcs do, that could just be their stance. This point was already made, but what an npc does is different from what the player does. What I'd like to know is why is there a sudden push to have smoking? For RP purposes? Some people need to accept that this game isn't going to cater to their ever desire. It just seems like too many players want SE to push the envelope for what a rated "T" game can have. Also as if some people want this to be slapped with an "M" rating. If you want a game that has content THAT mature, you should probably look for another game.
btw, everything you listed is either told through exposition, or implied. You never actually see people being raped or prostituted in this game, despite it's implications. There's war, but it's relatively bloodless, compared to what you'd see in other games, like Call of Duty.

The beauty of it all is that kids aren't dumb, at least not a large majority of them. Kids are a naive, prideful lot (teenagers especially) yet they are by no means dumb. If anything, they've been getting smarter and smarter as the years go by. I know this may be anecdotal evidence, but my younger sister and her friends, who are still in high school, are without a doubt much smarter than I ever was when I was their age. Whereas I made it through my years in school getting mainly B's, C's, and even a few failing grades, my sister has been getting nothing but A's since Elementary. She's also much more talented and applies herself in school than I did, being a member of various clubs, participating in Regional quizzes against other schools, playing multiple instruments, and even being a better artist than I ever will be. When I told her this morning that one of the reasons used against smoking in-game in this very forum was that "FFXIV has a colorful and family-friendly aesthetic", her response was a confused "Really?", and she only played the game as an archer for a few days.
Putting my younger sibling aside, how many of us grew up watching cartoons and movies that had smoking in them, playing video games that had cigarettes and cigars, yet never felt the need to go out to the nearest gas station and purchase a pack of Newports? Did any of us growing up have such little control over ourselves that we felt the need to start smoking or drinking simply because media depicted it lights both positive and negative? I'm willing to say that this isn't true at all. I am a 24 going on 25 year old man, who has spent 5 years of his life serving his country in the USN onboard a Naval Vessel that would (and has!) drive a lesser person to drink or smoke, yet I continue to remain as smoke and alcohol free as I had been when I first joined, even after being Honorably Discharged once I finished my contract. Why? Because taking up these vices is a choice.
As many people as there were that eventually picked up the bottle or cigarettes to cope with the difficulty of working aboard a ship with a crew numbering in the thousands, there were just as many that drink and smoke simply as a hobby, and many that were successful in actually kicking those habits to the wayside and going on to live healthier lifestyles. And while I applauded those people and gave them the congratulations they deserved for having the fortitude to make that choice, I didn't go around condemning those that continued by calling smoking a gross habit (though I certainly had a few chuckles at the folks
that numbered in the hundreds waiting in line to use the smoke pit after a drill). Because once again, smoking is a choice that they consciously made despite the health problems that it poses, and we should respect that. As far as I know, none of them had a gun put to their head and a cigarette put in front of them. And we were all kids once.
So no, I won't accept "kids are pretty dumb" as a reasonable excuse to not make an emote that NPC's already use available to players. My parents never went out of their way to tell me that I should never smoke because it's a disgusting habit, nor did they try to impress this upon my little sister. And yet, despite all the media that "glamourizes" smoking as the coolest thing since sliced bread, or depicts it as the worst thing to ever be created, I've never once let myself be influenced by it. So until someone comes up with better defenses than "Think of the children!", or "Smoking is nasty IRL so smoking in-game is just as bad", then I will continue to rally against it. Because otherwise, they're just making the same excuses that people make about how violence in a video game can cause people to commit violence in real life, which is blatantly false.
And that is an incredibly stupid hill to die on.
