Mouse stops working in-window: MacOS Client

Hi there. I play on Mac, and the game will stop responding to my mouse input. This only happens within the game, and I have to restart to get it working again.

I only really started to notice this problem after latest patch. What should I do?

Good afternoon and thank you for posting on the Final Fantasy XIV Technical Support Forums.

To clarify, does this only happen with the mouse, or does it affect the keyboard as well?

Do you notice any patterns to the issue? Does it happen only after doing certain actions?

We hope we can be of assistance in helping you enjoy the exciting world of Final Fantasy XIV!

Not SquareEnix support here, but reaaaally quickly here: the MacOS version of FFXIV is built atop CodeWeavers Crossover, which is itself built atop WINE. There are two potential issues with how WINE (and thus Crossover) handles mouse.

    1) If the WINE layer is running as a window but the Windows application within WINE is running full-screen, it can cause mouse events to get lost.

    2) If you have two monitors, if you move the mouse cursor to the monitor a WINE application is not on while the application is in the background, it can cause the application to no longer be able to read mouse events.

If either of those applies here, that might be your underlying issue.

(There's another thread with some discussion about it over here.)

Hi again, thank you both for your time.

I don't see this happen at all with the keyboard. It just happens with the mouse, and it can happen at any time. I can be logged in for hours, or logged in for 30 minutes. I can either be idle, or I can be in the middle of an instance, or in a city--there doesn't seem to be anything causing it.

To Packetdancer: It's running as a window. This is the first time I've seen this occur, however, in over two years of running this game on this machine, so I don't know why it'd change now? And I've seen it occur whether or not my second monitor is on (i.e. all windows on one screen vs. some windows on a second screen). For example, it just happened tonight, and my second monitor was not on (and it has happened in the past when it was turned on). For reference, the second monitor is a tablet monitor that I use to draw.

I'd try running it in full-screen mode just to see, because I'm fairly certain it runs full-screen within the bottle even when the WINE layer is running windowed. With regards to the second monitor, if it's even something that macOS is aware of and the cursor strays onto the screen—even if the screen is off—it would trigger the second-screen bug. Some monitors still show up as a monitor in the display list even when in low-power mode; I don't know if Cintiq-type tablets are one such or not. (You could eliminate that as possible cause by temporarily unplugging the tablet, though; if it still happens, you know it's not the second monitor issue.)

As for why it would change when it hadn't had the problem before, that part's easy; the version of Crossover that the FFXIV client is built atop for macOS was recently updated. In updating Crossover, it also updated the version of WINE used in Crossover, which quite possibly involved pulling the mouse cursor bug from mainline WINE into Crossover.

According to the patch notes, they found the underlying issue and fixed it in 5.21, so hopefully today's patch actually fixes this for you!

Hi all, I'm facing similar issue. My issue is replicable perfectly.
    1. Remove focus form FFXIV. Click desktop or other applications.
    2. Single click on title bar on FFXIV.
    3. Issue is occured.
    4. If I drag and drop the title bar (move window position), in game mouse cursor works fine.

I'm using Patch 5.21 client but this issue has not resolved.

We do apologize for the delay in responding. Have you tried using a different mouse?
