    Continuous DirectX Errors

Hey this'll be a long one. I've been running into direct X crashes (mostly 11000002 but I've seen the others too) since about the beginning of February, after the Nvidia 442.19 driver update and before the new patch dropped. I've had these directx errors before maybe once a month since I got the game last year but as of now they can occur easily 5 times in one day. I've looked into various threads looking into the error with FFXIV and Nvidia and I'm running out of ideas.
I'll try to be descriptive since I've tried as many options as possible. I really don't want to open my PC because it has a warranty that becomes void if I do.

What seems to trigger a crash:
-The crashes started happening more commonly after the Nvidia 442.19 driver update but I rolled back several drivers and even used a DDU and the problem stayed, so who knows what happened there. The newest update (442.50) from a few days ago seems a bit better but still crashes things.
-8 player content. For whatever reason I've been able to complete 24 man raids and not crash, but if I make it past something like the second phase in Ruby Weapon the game will crash every time I start it up during the fight, rendering it unplayable.
-When it was first crashing, it often happened in loading screens with artifacts all over the screen. This happens just a handful of times now.
-MSI Afterburner seems to suggest that the crashes occur around 82-83 degrees celsius, changing to about 72 degrees celsius with the fan cranked up.
-I should probably mention it used to crash at random times even in empty hub areas when I was just looking in my inventory. This was before I changed anything, which I'll go into detail on later. Since I've started using D9, things like dungeons, MOST trials, and 24man raids don't crash anymore.
-Event View tends to list at least 2 type 0 LiveKernelEvent events with each crash and that the driver stopped responding and recovered.

What I've done to try to fix it:
    -Updated drivers
    -Clean reinstall of drivers
-Using old drivers (Oddly enough, this method actually worked for 1 day for every driver I rolled back on. Then I got the crashes again so this is not an option anymore)
-Ran DDU and reinstalled the latest driver
-Deleted everything FFXIV related including character info and reinstalled it
    -Deleted DirectX cache
    -Regular temporary files cleaning
-Changed power settings to prioritize performance both on Win10 and the Nvidia control panel
-Set PCI Express>Link State Power Management to Off
-Changed Compatibility to Windwos 7 and 8
    -Disabled Fullscreen optimization
    -Disabled all startup apps
    -Turned off game mode
    -Turned off background recording
    -Turned off Game Bar
-Limited FPS to 60 in the Nvidia Control Panel
    -Set PhysX settings to GPU
    -Uninstalled Geforce Experience
-Turned off all overlays (discord, nvidia, xbox). I used to use these and they didn't bother the game.
-Changed the game's starup to borderless windowed
-Turned off all effects except my character's
-Installed MSI Afterburner to over/downclock the core temp.
-Ran hardware and devices troubleshooter that found nothing.

Things that have (as far as I can tell) yielded some progress:
-Running in D9 (game won't crash as frequently but in 8 person raids with cutscenes or a lot of things occurring in the background [which are all in the new patch] it'll still crash)
-Using MSI Afterburner to increase the fan speed to about 70% depending on the temperature.

For things like MSI Afterburner I've been using the Shadowbringers benchmark (which only runs on D11 but the graphics settings are set to Standard (Laptop)) to see if anything affected it. Without using it, the benchmark will typically crash at the first loading screen or slightly after. With the fan turned on, it CAN reach the middle of the second cutscene but never more than that. Over/downclocking didn't seem to do anything.
Since the new Nvidia driver update, the benchmark will make it through half of the second cutscene if I keep the PhysX set to auto-select instead if the GPU for some odd reason.

The error tends to just mention a fatal crash, but /one time/ in an Omega instance I received this message:

An unexpected error has occurred. Exiting FINAL FANTASY XIV. 2019-12-18_14:53

    ffxiv.exe + 53185

I'm not sure what this means though since I only got it once.

I have some ideas but right now it's all very frustrating. The game is mostly playable but it's just manageable, not fixed right now. I'd appreciate any help.

Good afternoon and thank you for visiting the Final Fantasy XIV Technical Support Forums.

Were any updates or changes made to the PC that coincide with this crash?

The only change was a driver update, but since then I used a DDU and installed an older driver and the problem stayed.

    Four thoughts.

    1. It sounds like you may be overheating? That will cause issues somewhat randomly.

    2. You have done a lot on the graphics side. Many people don't realize that DX11 also controls the audio. Is there an issue with audio drivers/system?

    3. Finally, from the software list I see many ASUS system apps. Is one of them causing issues? i.e. are power manager settings or other settings at fault?

    C:\Program Files (x86)\ASUS\AEGIS II\AEGIS_II_AlertService.exe 00001AF4

    C:\Program Files (x86)\ASUS\AEGIS II\Boost Launcher\BLMonitor.exe 00001D04
    C:\Program Files (x86)\ASUS\AEGIS II\Lighting\AudioDetect.exe 00001D0C

    C:\Program Files (x86)\ASUS\ASUS Manager\Ai Charger II\Ai_ChargerII_TrayIcon(ASUS_Manager).exe 000003C4

    C:\Program Files (x86)\ASUS\ASUS Manager\PC Cleanup\SecureDeleteBackground.exe 00001D84
    C:\Program Files (x86)\ASUS\ASUS Manager\Power Manager\Power Manager_background.exe 00001884

    4. Once upon a time I was having random crashes in FFXIV. The root cause was when I plugged in my my cell phone to charge it would draw just enough current , when graphics where going full bore, to pull down the power supply and reboot the system.

Good afternoon and thank you for the reply.

When the game crashes, is anything over heating? Additionally, do you have a way of monitoring these temperatures?

Found on my pc it was caused by a shading program that came with my rtx 2080 graphics card. When turned it off all the dx11 errors stopped. It kind of did same thing as what reshade would do.

    2. You have done a lot on the graphics side. Many people don't realize that DX11 also controls the audio. Is there an issue with audio drivers/system?

    3. Finally, from the software list I see many ASUS system apps. Is one of them causing issues? i.e. are power manager settings or other settings at fault?

    C:\Program Files (x86)\ASUS\AEGIS II\AEGIS_II_AlertService.exe 00001AF4

    C:\Program Files (x86)\ASUS\AEGIS II\Boost Launcher\BLMonitor.exe 00001D04
    C:\Program Files (x86)\ASUS\AEGIS II\Lighting\AudioDetect.exe 00001D0C
    C:\Program Files (x86)\ASUS\AEGIS II\Lighting\CheckCD_RomLighting.exe 00001CE8
    C:\Program Files (x86)\ASUS\ASUS Manager\Ai Charger II\Ai_ChargerII_TrayIcon(ASUS_Manager).exe 000003C4
    C:\Program Files (x86)\ASUS\ASUS Manager\AsHKService.exe 00000FEC
    C:\Program Files (x86)\ASUS\ASUS Manager\PC Cleanup\SecureDeleteBackground.exe 00001D84
    C:\Program Files (x86)\ASUS\ASUS Manager\Power Manager\Power Manager_background.exe 00001884

    4. Once upon a time I was having random crashes in FFXIV. The root cause was when I plugged in my my cell phone to charge it would draw just enough current , when graphics where going full bore, to pull down the power supply and reboot the system.
    1. I can only assume that because it happens in busy fights, but it used to happen randomly too. I'm already running on standard (laptop) settings so I don't think I can put the graphics any lower. At this rate I might just have to bite the bullet and void the warranty to clean it out.

    2. I've updated the audio drivers too but there was another update recently. Had an error with my headphones for a bit but that doesn't come up in the hardware and devices diagnostics anymore.

    3. Not sure, but I changed the settings on the power manager to focus on performance in case. Nothing else seemed to touch on performance or graphics. The checkcd_romlighting.exe and securedeletebackground.exe which are associated with ASUS both always seem to be running in the background.

    4. I have headphones, a mouse, and a keyboard using the usb ports right now. Was there a method to finding this out?

When the game crashes, is anything over heating? Additionally, do you have a way of monitoring these temperatures?

I only have MSI Afterburner to look at the temperature, my computer doesn't offer a built in program to monitor temperatures. Seeing as the temperature never goes over 83, that could be its limit. But even with the fans keeping the temperature below 63 degrees, it still crashes.

Was this in the nvidia control panel?

Use HWMonitor instead, as it will show all devices' temperatures plus wattage used per device/core.

Also, the Asus Aegis II software is kinda messy when dealing with DirectX programs.
FF14 runs in DX11 (or DX9 if you switch it to that) and one thing that most video cards do not like to do is to display more than one DX version at a time. Some of Aegis programs run in an overlay, which might run in a different DX version than the game is running under certain circumstances, which might cause the crashes.
If you don't actually use all the Aegis features, it's best to uninstall it....cause with the exception of a couple features, it is really just bloatware.

Progress update! While I haven't tried anything stressful ingame recently, I've managed to finish the SHB benchmark without crashing. All I've done since then is crank the fans to 95% and relocated the tower to sit on its side on a desk. Tried this a few times to then tried it without the fan and it crashed in the third cutscene. I've tweaked so many things at this point I could be forgetting something. Guess all this points to overheating, but I'm not sure how to fix that more than I already have without opening the tower. I'm not sure if I can rely on it for say farming e6s (it used to crash so badly in phase 2) but I'll be looking into how it handles ingame stuff coming up.
