I commend a dps if they are a sprout, to make em feel good, and encourage them to stick with the game.
otherwise, I'll commend a dps if I think they are doing more dps than I am (I am a pretty bad dps, myself)

I have leveled all tanks and heals, so if they are doing quite a bit better than average, then they'll get my com, if the other dps is not sprout or doing well.

Although, you'll also get my com if you made the run more interesting, be it unique strats, or good convos

If none of the above apply, then I'll just com who ever I think did best, as coms are free so I always give one after a run (unless I am ultra salty that day, in that case, no coms).

I am very stingy with my comms, personally. I will give my comm to whomever actually impresses me with their skill at the game. When I do hand them out, I make it a point to let them know personally how impressed I was with their gameplay. Maybe they adapted to an unexpected situation incredibly well, or maybe they outperform everyone else in the party in some other way. I only hand out comms to people that demonstrate brilliance in some form or another, be they DPS, Healer, or Tank, but they usually must be exceptional. I don't take into account peoples' manners or comments throughout the duty. You could be the biggest cunt in the world, or the nicest angel, it wouldn't make a difference to me. In the end, efficiency and skill are all that matter to me.

...Also, sometimes people leave group so fast you cannot give them a commendation so you have to pick one who is still there who also did well.
I can tell you one reason for commending a DPS: a good summoner.

One who is raising dead healers or dead DPS while still doing good damage and all the mechanics. I saw this last night in Ghymlit Dark. This SMN was on their job.

I know that feeling, playing a summoner and saving a run, only to get no commends.

I commend the other DPS because I know how rarely we get them regardless of actual performance. If they're particularly heinous though then I'll give it to the tank or healer depending on which of them stood out. For real though if your party's rdm saves the raid from a wipe while still putting out dmg give them at least a pity commend jeez (not a personal thing no not at all)

If they did all the mechanics well and made the most of the kits (as best as I can tell) I'll give them the comm. Things like ranged using Peloton, DNC keeping their partner buffed, BLMs using their isntant-travel abilities or knowing a fight well enough so they place their circle in the perfect spot, DRGs buffing another player with their Eye instead of just using it on themselves, RDM's not casting Vercure to heal people, SMN pet swapping appropriately, etc.

But usually it means the tank and/or healer would have had to under perform, first. Healer not DPSing or not healing when needed, Tank not using cooldowns as needed etc.

I'll be honest. If I com a DPS its because the both the tank and healer failed to impress me, or more likely, one of them failed and I took the other spot myself.

There are a lot of things a DPS can do right, not dying, keeping their rotations optimal, using any utility like res or peloton. But unless the tank and healer are both bad, the DPS isn't getting the com.

Why? Because in a group where every one performs well, the blue and green jobs had the additional distinction of helping to make the duty pop sooner. I know a lot of people might think this is unfair. But as I see it, FF is not a single class game, there is nothing stopping people from filling the adventurer in need role.

Besides, although I priorities coming healers and tanks, I really don't think this is as common as most people seem to think. My experience as a healer is that the more I excel and compensate for a bad tank, the less likely I am to get any coms. My experience as a tank is that the more I excel and make things easy for the rest of the group (by mitigating damage and positioning mobs for aoes and positionals) The less likely I am to get any coms. And even when I assess my performance as a DPS as having been horrible, I still somehow get coms.

Honestly I think I average about the same number of coms irrespective of the role I fill. I think the reason for that is that no matter what role you play, if your doing it well, your making it easier for the other roles to stand out as well.

If as a healer you successfully keep the tank with a woeful minimal ilvl alive through all the big pulls, then the tank stands out for doing so well despite their handicap.

If as a tank your properly geared, roll your cooldowns and position the enemies to allow dps to best use their positionals and aoes, then the healer and DPS stand out for killing everything so much quicker.

If as a DPS you avoid standing in bad, are properly geared and maintain the optimal rotation for your level range then your tank stands out for taking so little damage (everything died before cooldowns wore off)

So at the end of the day. If you want coms for some reason. Say hello, be friendly, have a nice glam, make a joke or two and keep your fingers crossed. But dont worry too much about what role you play, because when you stand out enough to get a com it often has as much to do with how well other players did as it dose todo with you.

Just FYI, a lot of times the adventurer in need is actually DPS. Almost always in alliance raids, guildheists and normal raids (though the latest not as much lately), sometimes even in trials and expert.
So queueing as DPS doesn't necessarily mean NOT playing adventurer in need.

On the other hand, the benefit of playing a role in need as healer or tank is already a fast queue by itself.

Had a lot of dungeons recently where the tank was pulling 1-3 mobs at a time or the healer was prioritizing Cure over other heals. Sorry, no comm unless you can at least outdo Trust NPCs.
