    Why do you commend DPS?

Hi everyone, posting this here rather than the DPS board because I feel it’s a more general thing compared to things like rotations and DPS parses that you might see in that board.

Firstly, I wanna say I’m dead serious with this post, I’m not baiting anyone and not trying to gloat. And secondly, on why I’m making this post in the first place, is that I can’t stop getting commendations when I’m leveling SAM!

Seriously, I get a stupid amount of comms now that I’m leveling, most of the time I leave with a least a commend, I got three recently and it wasn’t even (I think) a preformed party! What am I doing to deserve all these comms? All I do is kill things and do mechanics correctly, could it be how I’m playing SAM? I always have Jinpu and Shifu up, even during pulls in dungeons, I always AOE those mobs after I get those up, always make sure to use Iaijutsu liberally during those pulls (found out for mob pulls that instead of waiting to attain 20 kenki for Kaiten I can use Iaijutsu once, and then when I do my two AOES to get Sen, I’ll have 20 kenki so I can use two instead of waiting), and always have Hingabana up on bosses, but is this really worth 3 comms? I’m not keeping mobs away from the party, nor am I healing people, am I that good at SAM or something? Idk!

I never comm DPS when I play healer or tank (almost every day), so am I doing something wrong? Why do you comm DPS?

I usually will commend the DPS if they're doing well as their described job if I'm another DPS. Sometimes I won't comm if they just go running out the dungeon cuz controller takes some time to get to the menu. This also means you're doing AOE on trash packs, keeping your rotations up. Doing Damage - Those with utility using it as well especially ranged giving mitigation to tanks pulling large pack mobs.

I may not commend if I am leveling and want to get the challenge log XP (but that's not necessary for me anymore).

I will commend anyone regardless of roles if they do any of the following: they're nice people and don't get salty, they know their job and do well, if they're a new player and listen/ask for help, I like their glamour enough, or they're the last one in the instance. (they still need to do at least mildly well)

Pretty much if they do their job, or at least try, especially if they are playing a class I usually play and have some familiarity with. Not that I'm amazing myself but even just having some experience makes it all the easier to see when someone is actually trying. And yeah, if they're nice and at least try to be sociable.

Plus, given how frequently tanks and healers say their jobs are braindead easy anyway, I don't really see any special reason to commend them for just managing to stay awake.

Also remember that SAM has a bit of a bad rep now, like DRG. Not as bad as DRG, but still - jobs that "attract bad players" tend to make people breathe a sigh of relief when you're not a terribad player.

And sometimes, those surprised people comm.

    Psychology.

Well if... as you are saying you always AoE during mass mob pulls that will actually get you Coms.

If you've seen the thread about Tales from the Duty finder you will see multiple posts on people who sit there and single target rather than AoE in packs of 10+ mobs as if that ONE single mob is somehow more importantly than the other 9. Which puts ENORMOUS strain on the rest of the party. So that's one thing that will get you Coms especially from your DPS partner if they are doing it too. It makes runs go much more smoothly.

Secondly I can tell you a Samurai puts out enormous chunks of Damage so Samurai makes Boss Mobs go down much faster, especially in dungeons... just like a BLM does because there's generally not as much movement required in those.

So yeah I could easily see you getting a lot of Coms with Samurai.

Mostly, if they are doing well in the raid and not standing in crap all the time, expecting to get healed because they are too lazy to move a foot. If I don't have to res them 15 times in a trial or raid, or I don't see them just standing there soaking up a carry through, they are getting a commendation.

After leveling several dps and trying my best to get their respective ins and outs and seeing what distinguishes a bad dps from a good dps, I have a newfound appreciation for at least decent dps and comm them quite often. No matter which role I currently play.
A decent and espcecially a good dps can make a run insanely fast and smooth. Good dps melts even huge pulls and considerably lessens the strain on the healer. And skipping mechanics on boss fights is also nice like ignoring the last set of seeds in Grand Cosmos or skipping the last Seabed Ceremonry in Andyr.
If they also use any support they have, brownie points!

If I see a dps do his aoe roation and single target rotation properly, use his ogcds on cd (I see way too many dps not using their party buffs during big pulls...) and play mechanics, that's almost a guaranteed comm. I also appreciate funny or friendly people but there's generally not much talk in expert/ 80 roulette.

I received a lot of comms when I leveled SAM as well. I think, (and SAM mains please don't hate me for saying this) it's because SAMs die a lot. And if you don't die and are fairly competent at your job and role, you get commendations. That was my experience anyway. I received three comms often when I never did anything to really stand out.

    I just didn't die.

I commend the other DPS when I am DPs'ing if we clear stuff at a good clip.
