Pretty much. In my run once we figured out the mechanic I had enough time to type out what color was coming first.

Having said that, you had to:

    1) Identify what color debuff you had,
    2) Identify which paper color you were getting hit with first (opposite your original debuff color),
    3) Identify what color portal it was going into and
    4) Identify what color portal it was coming out of to be opposite of your NEXT debuff and position yourself accordingly
    5) All of the above while keeping some semblance of DPS uptime on the boss.

All of this within about a sub 10 second window (I think it's actually closer to about 5s). I can understand why this is frustrating to players. I think the portal mechanic while interesting is can be very frustrating with camera limitations.

That's asking a LOT for normal, casual raiders.

However, E7N does make me not want to go in there ever again especially with people who have never done it. If we didn't have a superstar RDM helping the healers with Raises there was NO way we would have beat it.

Veteran healers don't care if we need to heal, but right now we don't. We want interesting things to do during the downtime other than a 30s dot and a single filler spell that hasn't changed from lvl 4 to lvl 90.
Dead DPS do no DPS. Raised DPS do 25/50% lower DPS. Do the mechanics and don't stand in bad stuff.
Other games expect basic competence, FFXIV is pleasantly surprised by it. Other games have toxic elitism. FFXIV has toxic casualism.[/LIST]

I have trouble with the blue/red portals. I've looked for a guide but don't seem to be able to find one just yet. Anyone with a link to a good one? I need to heal it with one of my alts and I don't like doing that if I can't deal with mechanics before going. I've been dps'ing up to now.

Not sure if there is a guide, but the grasp of it is this:
    1. The first portal will be the one where the first portion of sin eaters came into, so be sure to pay attention where do they go.
    2. On "unjoyed aspect" + portals you will need to check what color sin eaters come to which portal. Don't forget that the color of your debuff changes after the contanct. So let's say you got Light debuff, which means you need to get Dark sin eaters. After that your color changes to Dark, so for sin eaters that will come from portals you will need to contact with Light aspected ones.

This mechanic isn't particularly hard, but it does require some amount of attention and somewhat fast reaction.

Thank you that was extremely helpful. Unlocking content on an alt right now and will be trying it soon. I feel confident now i understand the mechanic. I do not like healing content where I can't keep myself alive let alone the party.

Unless there are extra complexities I haven't noticed yet (having only cleared it tonight), figuring out where to stand for the portals + dark/light is a two-step process.

    1. Portals appear - pick a square either side of the centre; it doesn't matter which for now. Make sure the portal behind you and to the side are different colours.

    2. Dark/light beams appear - are you on the right side? If not, move diagonally to another square on the other side of the centre line.

The key element is to have different-coloured portals to your side and back.

    Ah,

Thats the part thats been smoking me. I get the whole Umbral/Astral thing but I've been scratching my head on the portals. I couldnt seem to figure out if the colors represented the umbral/astral attackes. Like Blue = White / Red = Pruple. So i thought i had to predict like two steps ahead. Like if im Astral, i gotta stand in front of Umbral, but then that means ill change to umbral so i also gotta be lined up with a blue/astral portal. But you're saying that i just need to be in front of the right color but also make sure the portals behind and beside me are different colors? Like if im astral, i stand in front of umbral, but i also got to make sure that im standing to where either its a blue behind and red to my side, or red behind and blue to my side? As long as theyre not the same?

That's right. You're thinking the right way in that you need to be hit by a different-coloured beam each time, but the portal colour has no direct relevance to the beam colour. The portals just predictably transport the beams so they emerge out of a side portal of the same colour.

Basically, you want the second beam (emerging from the side) to be a different colour to the first one that went into the portal behind you.

I explained it more step-by-step in this post.

(I think having played Portal helps you quickly get your head around how the portals work. It's the same logic and the game is based around working with more complex portal arrangements than this.)

Very cool. Thanks a lot, you've made my Iconoclasm runs much more enjoyable!
