I can respond by saying that they are the ones that are self-centered for not allowing me to optimize my job and enjoy the role, and vice versa. It's imo a useless argument that requires to ignore the reverse perspective, no matter which side you're on.

Then I think you need to adjust your expectations of what's realistically achievable in a pug duty. There's only so much optimisation you can expect to achieve with randoms.
