My apologies, I was unclear. I meant that if all your equipped items are fully melded, you can still open the meld interface with some other (unmelded) item in your armoury chest or inventory and then pick "equipped" from the dropdown at the top.The 'Meld' option will be greyed out if you can't meld anything else onto that particular piece of gear, which (if I read the first post right) is the whole complaint the OP had. The same thing's true of Repair; if the gear isn't below 100%, the 'Repair' option will be grayed out, even if other gear somewhere else is repairable.
Ah! Yeah, now I see what you were trying to say. Functionally it's the same thing as using the icon from the Actions panel (or putting it on a hotbar); using the action directly just skips the step of finding something else in your armoury chest (or a random dungeon drop in your inventory) to use the pulldown on. But if you don't have a free hotbar space and don't like putting up the Actions panel to click the icon, your suggestion is definitely the easiest way to figure out "do I have anything I still can meld?"
