Not sure how helpful it would be. Other games with similar multiple map chat systems usually ends up in people spamming ads for run sales or people just plain trolling people asking for help. I mean I guess if it is actually monitored but.. I would probably just keep it turned off if they added it. RMT getting into the channel would be gross.

No, I agree there has to be some, it's just hard to balance between "keeping the spam out and keeping novices out. I just have no clue what could do both.

OP already pointed out why NN is not a valid alternative.
Yeah well... something not adding up. I have a bunch of alt characters that I had crafting ambitions for back in the day, and was slowly leveling them all up over time. Changes to crafting/desynthesis in SB and ShB have culled those ambitions. At any rate, I mention that because when I logged my alts in to do the Valentine's Day event and get them the glamour, it turns out I hadn't logged any of them in for over 45 days so they all got Returner bonuses AND a game generated invitation to the NN (which I declined on all of my alts). Perhaps that's something only offered to Returners? Seems silly to me if new players simply can't join it at a Smith or something, iunno because it's never been a feature I've been interested in participating in.

Yes, returners get invited automatically (and then if they go from returner to sprout they stay in until the sprout goes away) but new characters instead need to be invited by a mentor. In fact I've never been in the NN as a novice, only as returner.
I imagine it's made to keep bots out?

But the OP said they are so low level because they quit and then they return .... So something doesn't make sense here.

For the record, I am very much against world chat. If I can turn it off, okay, but I don't know a single person who wouldn't turn it off, so that is kind of self-defeating

I guess, if they made it, it would be either spamfest or completely dead...

They didn't say that they personally hadn't been on the Newbie Network, at least not as I read the post. I took it to mean that the Newbie Network isn't actually really practical for first time new players because it's invite-only for them. (That said, I'm given to understand the NN varies wildly in quality between different worlds; it might not be really suitable for making social ties on their particular world even if they are on it.)

I know I've bumped into a lot of sprouts who feel the same way, fwiw. I've been collecting a number of them onto a cross-world linkshell I made; various experienced friends hang out there, as do other sprouts, and it's been useful for some of them who don't have FCs (and are on a different server so I couldn't invite them into mine). They get a channel where they can reach out with questions, but even more useful, they get a channel where they can ask for active help. ("Hey, I have to run <x> for the first time and I'm feeling a bit nervous about messing it up. Would anyone be willing to party up?")

The problem, from what I understand, is that even if you're on the newbie network for your world—and a lot of the sprouts I've met in dungeons who feel lost/alone aren't on their newbie network—it can be loud and impersonal. A world chat might end up with the same problem, while the little CWLS I made is smaller and less overwhelming. This isn't to say it's a solution to the problem, but it's a way we can help without having to wait for SquareEnix to implement something. Making little social 'webs' for the sprouts you encounter who need them (or really anyone who seems like they could use a social framework of folks to call on for advice and/or helping running content) is a way we can make a difference now, even if we also ask SE to make some sort of solution to make it easier for sprouts to reach out.

Spamfest. WoW has a city chat that only reaches the major cities. It's completely loaded with gold and run seller bots. You can hardly get a word in edgewise.

However, I wouldn't mind having zone chats, so you could talk to the others there without having to type /shout every time.

I would be down for it, I like to chat sometimes. (even though I'm very shy IRL) RMT spam will always be an issue though.

FFXI has a world chat, you can tell from any main city, so for example, your in Jueno, you can shout and you friend ( whose in Windurst) will be able to see it, I don't know why this isn't a feature in XIV
