It's a response to your "backward" statement.

We also have themes of genocide. Smoking is ubiquitous, there's no getting around that.

Kids aren't likely to deal with genocide in real life unless they live in certain parts of the world. The ubiquity of smoking is the reason why it would be considered more of a problem.

Lots of good ideas above. A couple I liked were

- A lantern or torch
- The ability to hold hands with your partner (or lean into them when sitting on a bench)
- As a scholar I too sometimes imagine Eos sitting on my Lala head when idling out of battle.

No ideas of my own I'm afraid.
