I'm in complete agreement. When I'm doing a dungeon for the first time and getting really into the story it's more than a little immersion breaking when there's players clad in a frog suit dyed a jarring shade of metallic.
The suggestion is also an excellent compromise - not everybody wants to see characters clad in skimpy glamour. If people want to push for such things to be available then they should be fine with there also being an option for such things to be hidden from view.
Years and years this game has gone on with weird options for people to glam into. Grumbles have been had but...
...5.2 appears and 'we've removed the gender-lock on the wedding gear' and SUDDENLY it's just too much.

Seriously, have you realised what mismatched outfits tend to look like with the glamour stripped off them? They are disastrous.
You'd be losing more coordinated glamours than you gained.
Similar suggestions have been made a fair few times over the years, actually. I also don't think there's anything wrong with the suggestion itself, especially since it isn't taking options away from anybody else.
Why is it okay for you to play as a fat chocobo, but it's not okay for me to play with my teammates wearing lore-appropriate gear? Especially if it's only client-side (ie, it wouldn't make a difference for you either way)

You can. No one says you can't. You just can't demand that of everyone else because you're uncomfortable with their decisions in an MMO. Sorry.

There are two ends to this spectrum.
On one end, western D&D-inspired RPG series tend to emphasize on being more physically realistic. Big bulky guys wearing heavy armor make the best tanks.
On the other, various anime and eastern RPG series tend to allow characters to get stupidly strong without any form of armor whatsoever. Behold the guy lifting a car over his head with one hand while wearing a t-shirt.
From what I've seen of Final Fantasy, both in this game and in some of the old retro installments in the series that I tried awhile back, the emphasis is on a mix of both. Normal characters adhere to normal rules, but some characters rise enough in strength so as to become something higher than human.
Too much work for little to no reward for the dev's if their comments on the glamour system in the past have been anything to go by. I very much doubt this will ever be a thing and frankly I'm glad for that. Half the fun of this game is suffering through other people's glamours to find the good ones you then want to steal. (Or steal the bad ones to inflict on others, I don't judge.)
