When I started playing 14 again, I had to turn off cactuar's NN regularly, because it was a nonstop wall of text, and I was autoinvited because I was somehow a returner and mentor simultaneously.

It fills the dual role of global linkshell (11 and 14 are combined the least friendly and most counter-intuitive games for being social, so NN is likely the first and possibly only group chat you're ever going to see as a newbie) and new player help center, and while it always filled that role, it was a bit too much at times.

Veteran healers don't care if we need to heal, but right now we don't. We want interesting things to do during the downtime other than a 30s dot and a single filler spell that hasn't changed from lvl 4 to lvl 90.
Dead DPS do no DPS. Raised DPS do 25/50% lower DPS. Do the mechanics and don't stand in bad stuff.
Other games expect basic competence, FFXIV is pleasantly surprised by it. Other games have toxic elitism. FFXIV has toxic casualism.[/LIST]

No it's not, if there is world chat channel in this game, it will be swamp with bot in no time, atleast with NN there is an easy way to filter them out, and even if they manage to get in we can alway kick them

as long as there is no toxicity like shaming, trolling, spoiling or abusing other player, NN channel is fine on it own

    What is a Mentor

Mentors are veteran players who chose to offer their time and experience to help guide new adventurers. To facilitate their assistance, mentors will gain access to a special chat channel as well as a means to easily register for duties and trials with new players.

As a mentor you are expected to actively perform the following:

Provide gameplay advice for new adventurers and other players.
Be an exemplar for player etiquette.
Invite new adventurers to the Novice Network and answer their queries in the chat channel.
    Mentors chatting in the raid.

    Mentor's search info.

Personally I've had NN turned off for years now due to it just flooding my text box...

Sure, I suppose you could ask someone about stuff like: "Where is x" or "How does x mechanic work", but for any class related questions, I would advice looking stuff up online instead of asking people on NN. This is because the NN role is so easy to get that anyone can do it, so the chat tends to be filled with under performers who have no idea what they are talking about.

Why does the 1% bad mentors matter more than the rest? The NN serves its purpose daily to allow experienced players to help novices.

NN also has savage and ultimate raiders who are willing to teach a class up to very high levels. Some of them are pretty dedicated too. There advantages to learn directly from a mentor, just looking up info isn't always the best way to learn. They're also not mutually exclusive.

This is not 1%. This is a trend. These are experienced players who play for several years. Some of them have their own FC.

I meet such people in dungeons and raids quite often and write reports. But reports and blacklisting do not guarantee:
    1. That they will stop doing this.
    2. That I will not meet them at roulette again.

And how many do you meet that aren't like this? I bet you have no idea, because it isn't noteworthy to get someone who isn't acting like this. Moreover, someone can be a mentor and not be displaying their crown.

I already answered in another thread. No more than 10, probably less. People who do not do mechanics, standing in the AOE and pull before the tank. People kicking newbies because they didn't like something. People talking rude and insulting. Sadly, most of them were mentors.

Something about shiny crown, by the way. From Reddit.

Not sure what OP is talking about. Perhaps they had a bad experience? People have been really helpful in the NN channel. Newbies and mentors all asking questions and getting help. Anytime a newbie asks for help plenty of people jump in to assist. It’s become a really positive experience. Same goes when running dungeons with a mentor.

I don’t remember ever seeing a mentor act bad except during the great purge. When Mentorship was first released. Other than that it’s been great.

We usually never see post about how great mentors are because people are satisfied and leave it at that. The loudest posts are always that one negative experience. The post is followed by, “get rid of mentors.”

Usually the problem wasn’t the mentor, but the one who can’t handle criticism.
