i don't think it simple, the reason for NN exist is because FF14 doesn't has somekind of world chat channel, so if you get rid of NN, new player mostly feel lost when they start their game since they have no where to ask about the game
This, this, this!
As one of those new players, FF14 seems so lonely without a world chat channel. "Join a Free Company" is the popular mantra most people shout out, but it isn't that easy for some.
And I have had a lot of good interactions with the mentors in the Novice Channel. Very helpful.
Yes, the novice channel is mostly random chat. And I like that. And when I have a question, someone is there to help.
So yes, the novice network is good and FF14 needs a world chat channel. (One that people can opt out of.)

So you are confirming the mentor system is worthless, and we just need a world chat channel to replace it?! I agree. This, this, this!

I guess the world chat would serve the same purpose. However, in my experience in WoW, you can ask in world chat and very often not get an answer.
FF14 mentors, on the other hand, are routinely helpful. At least in the novice channel. Not much experience in the outside world since...well, no world chat. And I hate asking people out of the blue. At least in a world chat, you know they are looking for a conversation...or at least are willing to read one.
So I am fine with the mentor thing, as long as mentors want to be mentors. If you don't want to be one, why have it? Maybe as a toggle? If you don't want to help, turn off your mentor status. When you're ready to help, turn it back on.
But yeah, FF14 needs a world chat. Won't happen, though. Doesn't seem to fit the culture.

No it's not, if there is world chat channel in this game, it will be swamp with bot in no time, atleast with NN there is an easy way to filter them out, and even if they manage to get in we can alway kick them
as long as there is no toxicity like shaming, trolling, spoiling or abusing other player, NN channel is fine on it own
i just make 2 chat tab, one for NN, other for everything else, and switch between them, easy even i play on PS4When I started playing 14 again, I had to turn off cactuar's NN regularly, because it was a nonstop wall of text, and I was autoinvited because I was somehow a returner and mentor simultaneously.
It fills the dual role of global linkshell (11 and 14 are combined the least friendly and most counter-intuitive games for being social, so NN is likely the first and possibly only group chat you're ever going to see as a newbie) and new player help center, and while it always filled that role, it was a bit too much at times.
