If the symbol was a big steaming pile of horse manure, with flies and stink lines added for extra authenticity, then it would change things.
I'd gladly wear that as a symbol of the nastiness spewed by those non-mentors who judge the many by the actions of the few. The icon was never the issue. Letting bad apples turn you into one, is.

I would prefer get rid of mentor status
Delete all icons
Just keep "helper" chats for newcomers
Mentors are trash ( from my experience stand point )
You do not need to have a special status, icon, or mount to help others. You can do it just out of a desire to help. And this can be called "real help".
Yes, there will be a lot of indignation and denial, as in the previous topic, because, obviously, today's mentors do not like it when the truth is told about them.

Knauleche seikis no man
The argument that people wouldn't want to join a mentor system without a reward could be made, but honestly I would rather have this system, where no mentor rewards are given, and the few who stay in the mentor program are actually there to help, or having the mentor rewards all obtainable by other easier means making obtaining them via mentor roulette a hindrance. You do not need to have a special status, icon, or mount to help others. I would actually be 100% down with keeping the current NN chat, and also having a World Chat tab exist. It would probably get a lot of people in the NN out of it and just have them chat in the World Chat tab.
I played MMO games where there was nothing like a mentor system, but people helped each other. Through a world chat, in raids and dungeons, they simply gave each other advices and did not expect any awards. This system of voluntary and mutual assistance worked perfectly, and there was no toxicity associated with privileges or prestige.
Now we have a group of "chosen people" who do not understand the point of mentoring. As soon as the SE increased the number of recommendations, people began to receive craft mentoring to wear the crown. This is just ridiculous.
I honestly think there should not be two types of mentors and instead consolidate the combat and trade mentors requirements into one because there's a massive disparity in how difficult it is to get the former over the latter.
Cactuar's novice network is starting to hit the mentor limit again and it's largely because of people just getting trade mentor for the easy crown.
As a new player i really like the novice network being there. Its helped me a great deal with stuff i didnt know about. I guess novice network and the mentor system go hand in hand so if you take it away then novice network wouldnt be there and i probably wouldnt know half the things ive learned from the novice network.
I agree with you! I’ve always thought of the crown the same way you have. Changing it would be a great first step.
When I started playing 14 again, I had to turn off cactuar's NN regularly, because it was a nonstop wall of text, and I was autoinvited because I was somehow a returner and mentor simultaneously.Cactuar's novice network
It fills the dual role of global linkshell (11 and 14 are combined the least friendly and most counter-intuitive games for being social, so NN is likely the first and possibly only group chat you're ever going to see as a newbie) and new player help center, and while it always filled that role, it was a bit too much at times.
