Kinda expecting a new healer and caster in the next expac just cause it balances out the number of options, ignoring blu and ranged dps.

Also makes sense to me to tackle healers collectively at the same time as developing a new one because then when you're looking at class features/identity/uniqueness they're part of that?

I think Chemist could be a neat one, I like the idea of the class having abilities that are just different items, the various potions for heals, bombs and the like for attacks. A "mix" ability/effect seems pretty cool, maybe complex, could be like mudras or could be like DNC combos where one "item ability" gives you a buff that modifies other "item abilities".

    Morale Booster. MRL.

They 'encourage' the other party members to keep pressing on where otherwise they would give up and pass out.

They use the same weapon as BRD, and play REALLY bad music until your health is back up.

I'm honestly not sure the game could actually manage not bringing out a new healer. New jobs are what sell the expansions because they're not only the easiest thing to explain to people about an expansion, but also the one part of an expansion that is fully tangible to players as the lenses through which we see the game. Those lenses for healers will be pushing eight years old by the time 6.0 rolls around, and without a new job to revitalize the hardest role in the game (and maybe some other incentives offered), I'd genuinely expect FFXIV healers to wind up on the endangered species list.

As for next healer, no it won't be a pet job because scholar takes that spot (more or less), it won't be melee unless it's only for doing damage, and it'll most likely follow the same template that every other healer job works off of. Something like a Medic or any other alchemical-themed job is a possibility, but not with a pet.

An interesting point I saw elsewhere was that Healer is the only role you can't switch to at a previous level cap at this point which could be a factor.
You can start any of the other roles at 50 (SAM/RDM) or 60 (GUN/DNC) but healer you need to level from at least 30, unless you happened to level SMN of course, which can make it a bigger investment to just try it out unless you buy a level skip.
