    Actually they have. They mayan calendar does not require a leap year. But we modern westerners aren't afforded the luxury of having the room to all have a massive stone structure in our backyards just so that we can know what day of the year it is.

    Interesting fact: the calendar (which are actually those pyramid looking buildings) causes a shadow to be cast on the ground. There are rocks placed on the ground around the temples that look like a serpent's head, during the solstice the tip of the shadow lines up directly with the serpent head. At which point they would celebrate by sacrificing the winners of a game that's much like basketball to their gods.

    Also, If you really want to go off the deep end with 2012 conspiracy theories, look into Terrance McKenna's work on the subject. It's interesting stuff, whether or not you believe it.
