I feel like the best solution to this is the one we already have: design contests.

No, because SE is the one who would be hosting and distributing the copyrighted content. It's the same reason why Youtube had to put in such aggressive copyright policies a few years back - including having bots manually flag suspicious content from both visual and audio samples - as it was the only way to placate angry companies and keep themselves from being sued into oblivion.would the burden not fall on the person who uploaded the mod in the first place? and if so, why couldn't square enix report this individual to the copyright holder? is there any precedence for this in the japanese courts because the scenario you present sounds absolutely absurd
While I don't see it happening, the game could use official modifications of what we have.
-Variations on outfits. For example, the valentine's waistcoat having the (original) long, short/rolled-up then short sleeves for the 3 variations. Maybe even having an option to have a bowtie or ribbon instead of a necktie.
-Having the option to dye more than one asset of your outfit.
-Being able to alter hairstyles more like flipping the entire hairstyle or having length sliders (Back hair, bangs and side hair being separate sliders) and wavy to curly versions of some existing hairstyles.
-Body sliders, more scars, body scars, body hair, body tattoos etc etc
Pretty much just ask for more customization.
Aside from Elder Scrolls Online and Fallout 76, those 2 series were built around offline singleplayer gameplay so in the end modding them didn't effect other people playing the game. Shift to online play and even something like a client side mod editing the appearance of things could be used to gain an unfair advantage against other players. TBH it's the potential for misuse likely being the biggest issue with second place coming in as the inequality caused between PC and console because when it comes down to it. To open that door at all would literally be blowing the dam apart and allowing all the water it held back to wash over the world as far as PC is concerned. To be fair though there are already mods for FFXIV available on PC. A majority of them do little more than edit the appearance of specific items which can only be seen by the client with the mod installed and for the most part don't really effect other players. However that didn't stop someone awhile back from making a crying post that they were supposedly being hurt or impacted by the thought that there "might" be some person on PC running these types of mods that "might" see their character completely naked in game and that to them it was the same as someone spying on them when they're naked IRL...
Oh, this thread AGAIN. Yikes.
Eh Bethesda mods on skyrim ps4 sucks have you tried it? You have no cbbe hardly any decent races and the enviorment mods are a bit lame along with the housing items so honestly they would have to do better.i never understood why that square enix was so against mods. i feel like if they had their own curated mods (while of course maintaining their stance against nsfw mods/copyrighted material), this would help bring together the community.
and as for console users who might cry "not fair!", there could probably be a similar solution that allowed bethesda to bring mods to console
the only mod id really want are some of the AB.. mods which in my opinion is still safe for work just might weird out ppl that my friend uses on pc on their kitty character but thats innocent and due to personality that we have lol
However I think people seem to take mods a little to far the reason why alot of people (well atleast myself mod on some games) Are to play in my own thoughts without depending and hoping for the game to finnally add it in.. If i was on pc I would have made a mod that let me walk around with primal Ifirt just to get that good classic summoner feel.
This is why I judge mods on tiers such as
1. Tier one is basicly anything that is appearence related maybe weapon skins/hair/capes and so forth.
2. Immeresion mods Like things that make it feel like you are really there talking to the character.
3. This tier I'm okay telling people no on because this effects direct game play things such as telling you what is coming next and when to use this or that basicly wows flashing skill mod are the one I'm against.
Inconclusion I think alot of people seem to not understand or care about it but there are innocent mods that are more on a personal experience such as appearence and immeression tiers. THen you got game changers which are not innocent mods. Now you may say contest solves the appearence issues or Immersion but thats assuming you win which in my experience leads to so many better looking items to be denyed just because popular vote.
I don't think a person should have to prey and hope that X image on a outfit wins by popular vote lol this is why I support appearence mods because everyone has a diffrent sense of style not everyone likes the same style so popular vote on style is just stupid honestly.
Now As for why I play on ps4 over pc well its simple controll plays bad on pc and I'm not good with keyboard/mouse other wise I would for some of the mods my friend shows me I'm Jelly of her mods I admit it but I keep it to myself and shrug it off because in the end I am on ps4 just the price of playing the game in a way that works best for me personally.

The thing about mods is that they KNOW that some of them are fine, and some of them are downright illegal for a multitude of reasons. It would simply cost them too much money to do anything other than say "No they're not allowed" - For one, copyright is a major thing in some mods, and if even a single mod that breaches someones copyright were to slip through the cracks and be officially endorsed, suddenly they're in deep water. It's simply not worth it for such a small portion of the playerbase that might use mods, not to mention the added difficulty of the game being cross platform.

I... I loved Skyrim. I've never used any mods for it, and I've sunk hundreds of hours into it lol
I mean, there are some awesome mods I'd love to use if I ever get back into the game, but I don't think I'd call them "necessary" really.
Anyway the only mods I've ever wanted for FF were a damage meter, some additional UI functionality (more flexibility in font/hotbar scaling, etc.), and maybe some kind of glamour tracker like what mogit and similar things do in WoW. But the devs seem determined to treat all add-ons in a weird half gray don't talk about it they're evil but they're not kinda way, so... Idk. Most bizarre take on add-ons I've seen in an MMO tbh.

I'm just afraid that, if they allow mods, they would start not developing features in the game in favor of letting mods provide the features.
One good thing about the recent controversy is they added a new feature in game, although they've also limited its usage, which is unfortunate for some people/scenario.
Glamour mods I could see being a thing- the hairstyles SE provides are really... bad or just plain lackluster. The hairstyles I've seen modders create are amazing! Most give Viera just more- or give Elezen females better hairstyles because they have terrible ones lol
I've also seen HD mods that give actual texture to the skin, like blemishes and so forth so we don't look so much like 1980's mannequins that are unfinished- and the best mods give us Toes with sandals. Yes, actual toes.
