How latency-friendly is FF14?

I've been trying FF14 on and off for a bit.


I live out in a very rural area, so satellite is my only option.


How latancy-friendly is FF14? We're talking 1000ms latency.

That is going to be problematic. Up to 200-300 ms latency should be viable, but more than that and you will have problem with some mechanics.
You will get hit by AOEs that you don't see in time, and some of those hit HARD.

You can probably get through the MSQ and the mandatory dungeons and trials with some work, but the harder fights will likely be nearly impossible for you.

That's sad news to hear. I notice a lot of the fights have AoE that target right under you, and have an effect that is large enough to make it impossible to run out of in time. WoW generally doesn't do this, though their recent patch has added some. Usually, telegraphed attacks are where the boss faces or some random area that you have a shot at avoiding, or are usually (but not always) small enough to get out of in time.


FF14 is to beautiful to look at and has a great story. I'm trying hard to make it work.

If you don't mind passing on the majority of battle content, ie anything not required for the story, you could still play the game socially, for housing, crafting, etc etc. For the required battle content, I'd recommend playing a DPS role so your death isn't a big deal. You may also consider Bard, Machinist, or Dancer in particular, as they can move all the time and by staying on the move, you can dodge at least some AOEs without ever seeing them.

If this doesn't work or isn't the gameplay you want... well, can always try again when Starlink is live or some other better internet option becomes available...
