Use Emote While .... (what are these symbols?)

If you open the emote window and hover over an emote, a bunch of symbols at the bottom of the window light up. These tell you when you can use the emote.

Person standing on a line: You can use the emote while standing
Person's torso over wavy line: can use while swimming
Wavy line with bubbles underneath: (what is this?)
Flattened circle: (what is this?)
Chair: can use while sitting
Chocobo: while mounted
Fish: while fishing

Wavy line with bubbles is available while underwater.

The flat circle is apparently for while laying down, though the only form of laying down we have is dozing on a bed-like item, and I cannot seem to get any to work while in any doze pose. Maybe someone else can shed some light on this one.

Also, other than expressions, nothing else is available while fishing. But we're getting a fishing patch in a couple of weeks.... hmm....

This page seems to concur with you Cana about emotes lying down (hovering the cursor over the revelant icon brings up a helpbubble that indeed says that). I suppose it's meant to be one of those things that was added for some potential future content that has never actually been implemented, but still exists.

Yeah it's only available in Stormblood and Shadowbringers areas - where you can dive underwater it will be allowed automatically (there is no visual indication to that effect on the map as far as I know, but it's usually pretty clear where you can dive and swim underwater), but to actually take a mount underwater with you requires you to unlock flight in that zone first (mount diving is unlocked at the same time). And the story will require you to go underwater at times in the revelant areas too so don't feel you'll miss out on anything cool!
