I'm new to this game but I'm looking for friends to play with, how do i know what groups I would like or what's the best way to find them?

She said you were cute.
A big part of the game is doing MSQ, which unlocks content as you progress. Something to consider is finding friends at your level that are interested in working through the game, as opposed to veterans that want to rush you through content (because *they* have already done it).
How do you find friends? Just tool around playing the game, and talk with people when you feel inspired. However, here are some warning signs about FCs:
- Avoid FCs that invite people willy-nilly. Low-effort FCs mean zero effort done to help you.
- Avoid FCs that don’t have a focus that helps you. No focus means no interest in helping you.
- Avoid FCs that already have an FC house with everything upgraded. Likely that they “obtained” the FC after other people left the game, and they don’t know anything about how to help you.
- Leave an FC if nobody is around, etc. Just wasting your time because they can’t be bother to encourage group activities, etc.
For dungeons and trials, the Party Finder is pretty good at filling spots. If you already have a partial-party (with your friends), then the Party Finder will top that up.
To get advanced, cross-world linkshell (essentially a custom chat channel) is good for organizing people on different servers. You’d want to do this with dungeons and trials that require coordination.
For that matter, avoid people that want to do “unsynced” content because they’re equivalent to people that have already played that content, and are just farming it (i.e., they want to play the game efficiently by, ahem, not playing the game).![]()
The Novice Network is sometimes a helpful place for new players to get help and find a FC to join. And sometimes it's not. It depends on the players who have joined it on a given world. Giving a shout in Limsa/Gridania/Ul'dah asking for an invite will likely reach a Mentor who can invite you.
The only way to know if you're going to like a particular FC is to join it and get to know the other members. Not everyone is looking for the same type of atmosphere/personality. Some like it really chatty but everyone does their own thing, some like it quieter but with people who are willing to group when it's time to do a dungeon or trial for MSQ, others want some other variation.
It can take a while to find one that's right for you. Don't be afraid to try one out then leave if you decide it's not what you're looking for.
Echoing sentiment already stated above--you probably won't really know if an FC is for you until you try it for a while, especially since it is different for everyone.
Do you want a group that is super social, and talking basically all the time (in text? on voice?)? Do you get annoyed by people randomly narrating their lives, or asking for handouts? How quick are you to perceive "cliques" and are you quick to make friends? Do you like when everyone says hi when you log in, or doesn't wait for goodbyes? Are you looking for regular events, or are you more of a go with the flow type? It more or less comes down to what level of social interaction you are looking for, and whether personalities mesh.
There are FCs of all kinds out there, so don't be afraid to try one for a little and duck out if it isn't quite what you're looking for. There's no point in staying if it isn't a good fit--this game is supposed to be fun for you, after all, and most don't mind departures anyway.
As for where to look, there's this forum, r/ffxivrecruitment on reddit, randomly shouting in any of the big cities, looking up the FC of someone you had a good interaction with.... I found mine on reddit, messaged the FC leader to try to get a feel for the group, and have no regrets. ^-^
