I still think Urianger is just putting on an act or trolling or something. That takes some genuine effort to maintain that speech pattern despite literally nobody else anywhere ever speaking in a similar manner. Worse, he explicitly knows the people around him often have some minor difficulty in deciphering what he's saying, and yet still insists on being as archaically verbose as possible.

Dude's been in Eorzea long enough to pick up on the fact that he should probably consider learning how to converse with the locals a bit more efficiently.

The OP doesn’t understand that they can go into the game settings and choose the synonyms that will show in dialogue bubbles. There’s like a drop-down for each word.

Pfft, if you think that's ole English, you are sorely mistaken. Provided the ole you are using is supposed to mean old, as in the title, not the "previous" form/archaic . If this game was using actual Old English no one would understand anything. What this game uses is just archaic versions of Modern English.

Oh and to add to that, the Japanese you are listening too is probably the same way. Truthfully, the reactions you have to the English dialogue would probably the same if you understood japanese as intended. Provided you don't understand Japanese at all.

Trust me the way English speakers "complain" about English dialogue is the same thing in every language we aren't special.

But the Japanese also uses archaic forms? Does it just help to not understand what you're hearing so you can imagine what you please?

Funnily enough, while archaic, and still using many... big words so to say, Urianger is pretty easy to understand in Japanese. I think they went the extra mile with the english version to make him sound as convoluted as possible.

Actually the more I think about it, it isn't even that archaic in japanese, just overly polite, and sophisticated (?).

PS: to be fair both english and japanese are secondary languages to me.

I think I read if from somewhere that JP version is using normal dialogue. But I wish the English version use normal term on some of the fights though, starboard, and larboard comes into mind. Why not just use simple term like how JP use left and right or something.

I don't speak Japanese so can't compare directly, but what I'd read is that he uses some archaic formalities and it was hard to directly translate the way he speaks into English, so they went for more generally archaic instead.

The problem with those specific attacks is that the Japanese names do translate to what English calls port and starboard - except the Japanese terms are more like "leftboard" and "rightboard", so they both convey the nautical theme and give the direct message of where the attack is coming from.

The English version can't do both those things at once, so they opted for the literal translation and deliberately used the archaic term "larboard" because it starts with L to help people remember to go left.

The translator talked about it in an interview and said they work more closely with the gameplay designers now to make sure it doesn't happen again.
