Just to kill any temptation even further, it's even worse if you go back.
The destruction of Teldrassil was a pre-patch exclusive story, which means they removed the entire questline explaining and revolving around it once BFA launched. When I gave BFA a go, both the end story explaining how Legion ended after Sargaras stabbed Azeroth and the intro with Teldrassil were deleted from the game and you simply skipped to BFA and Teldrassil was gone.
I don't think I lasted more than 2 weeks there, that was the last chance WoW got from me.
I don't really have an attachment to any of the starting cities, wouldn't be bothered if any of them blew up into pieces. I have more interest in expansion city states such as Ala Mhigo or Eulmore.
For me it would largely depend on how it was handled. I assume the OP is basing this off of the burning of Teldrassil and destruction of the Undercity in Battle for Azeroth.
I detested the burning of Teldrassil, because it felt like for so long the night elves were reduced to punching bag for the horde, losing ground, always under attack in ashenvale, Hyjal and Moonglade neutral zones etc. Then the night elves lose their capital and have Darkshore turned into a neutral back and forth warfront zone. The destruction of the Undercity I had less issue with because the Forsaken had gained a lot during WoW and expanded, it was a big blow for them but not a big blow after years of bad news already.
My biggest issue though was it felt unnecessary. Blizzard just wanted a big spectacle to kick off their war story with minimal night elf involvement after that other than the darkshore conflict which has no resolution shown in game. If Limsa or Ul'dah were destroyed for shock value, I'd be completely against it. If it served a real narrative purpose beyond a cool visual of a giant burning tree and they actually made it feel important etc, I might be fine with it.
Luckily with FFXIV it wouldn't be because of some annoying, forced and repetitive faction conflict. So it would have that going for it.
there are lots of places from 1.0 that dont exist anymore or where blocked off i use to love to visit. eastern corthas highlands and northern corthas highlands are only some examples
I suppose it depends on how much I like an area as well as what replaces it, replacing an area with an upgrade (especially if newer techniques can add extra value) vs just losing an area that's important and that's that. Like I don't dislike Northern Thanalan but if it got bombed or entirely changed and that's that I'd be kay lol.
Personally, on the topic of destruction and big changes, I had imagined Ul'dah being destroyed and moving to recuperation via some of the nearby destroyed civilization as a big in game project. With all the refugees of Ul'dah already going there it needs a bigger home anyways (and the political climate is rather tumultuous), and would be a quaint picture to have everyone become a refugee, could have a lot of fun telling that story too (the perspectives, without attempting to be heavy handed it could still be interesting to see views- before, during, and after). With the replacement perhaps using some of Sil'dih's aqueducts / structures to create a water themed magical non-undead capital city (after recovery at least lol), with that lovely ancient magical mysterious underground ancient vibe. Could have a portions that poke outdoors of course (I know technically there was an outdoor Sil'dih mirage in the game, but since the city is fairly unviewed by us they could add a water chamber :P). I just imagine an underground, civilized, watery, magical environment would look nice in FFXIV (an underground Rivendale/Altissia - maybe the center can be open to above ground with dramatic skylighting).
Might be helpful, and nice for those who wouldn't appreciate the change, to have the ability to access old Ul'dah, to prevent breaking some quests even, through praying at the memorial shrine and mountains of flowers piled up against the rubble-d gates of Thal, activating a hardcore echo trip. Everything done would be technically done in the past, or something of time being non-linear- enter-able but not via standard teleports anymore, making it seem more gone but not "lost data" if someone had wanted to walk the streets from memory- something similar I believe was done for the NE though that's only what I heard they planned to do with for NE starting after destruction of the starting zone tree.
May even have a raid or big dungeon piece involved too- :3... all the zombies down there in Sil'dih, with a sliver of humanity and a mountain of despair- growing over the ages and, tipped further by Ascian or Void, such a big mess of dead and interference culminating to creating some sort of abomination primal- first primal summoned by the non-living. Through the final bout with the content and last laugh of the dead primal it returns the years earlier favor to Ul'dah. By cursing Ul'dah's land, to cause all who live there to get sick and for it's foundations to wither. Much later, as the curse fades (/is slowly worked to lesser strength) SE could turn the ruins into sort of cleaned our memorial park, with nice views of nature having taken many key locations (like an abandoned city as nature comes on in)- maybe have some quests going into vaults. Also, since it was just a big stream of wild thoughts, thought it could be a way to have more vivi-like characters which I found a bit cute lol. Here those trapped in the depths of Sil'dih unable to get out, the survivors of the plague had to shed flesh and land their sounds into advanced automatons to survive.
I find it the most convenient, with the vendors and aetherite closer together than any of the others. The only downside is all the gil seller spam, which can be fixed by putting chat in battle mode.
Still, I spend most of my idle/crafting time in Eulmore.
I don't have a city that I belong to I'm a nomad. So it doesn't matter to me if MSQ destroys a city.
The city I have the most attachment to, I spend the least amount of time in. Plus, Ishgard has already had it pretty bad.
The time I spend in city states are mostly for utilitarian reasons, so ultimately what matters is I still have a place to exchange my scrips, GC seals, MB access, aetheryte, shops, all that stuff. It would be far more impactful to me if taking out Gridania also destroys Lavender Beds. That would be a big problem because that's where my house is, and this isn't SIMS. There is no way I would have put the amount of time into decorating my home if I knew there was a chance I could lose it on a whim's notice.
I try very hard to only attach to parts of the game that I have more control over such as my own character and the jobs she is disciplined in. It doesn't always work out that way, and had to pull some daggers out of my chest after certain parts of the MSQ. As such, this is also why I am far more emotionally impacted from the job and role quests opposed to the MSQ.
We should really start putting leashes on our favourite FF14 boys and girls, hm?I try very hard to only attach to parts of the game that I have more control over such as my own character and the jobs she is disciplined in.
