I like having my trade mentor crown on because sometimes new players will see it and ask me to craft gear for them. Obviously I don't need a crown to do this, but it makes it easier for new players to identify that I'm willing to help.

Lol I've never been motivated enough to bother going through the steps for a Trade Mentor crown. I'm happy enough to chatter at newbies in my FC or the odd person on FB, and the folks in my FC know me well enough to know they can come to me with any questions about crafting they might have. I've never seen the point in getting a special little crown to mark I'm a Trade Mentor. I'm honestly surprised anyone does? As OP said, it's not exactly a hard achievement to get and there doesn't seem to be any benefit for it except bragging rights.
Now, if Trade Mentor required one to be an omnicrafter/gatherer with every single one of the various books and at least 90% of the book contents gathered and crafted or something on top of a hefty collectible crafting/gathering requirement. That would be an actual challenge. Particularly if one of the requirements mandated some sort of tangible proof you assist other players as well. Perhaps in the form of a Tradecraft Hall where would be mentors can post information and others can comm them if the information is helpful? If the perk for doing all this was access to special skills or other mentor exclusive benefits (like maybe full gear sets with all 5 materia slots open?)... THEN it would be worth going for.
I do think the requirements are a little on the easy side. Around the same time that people were risking losing access to the Novice Network there were people making it clear that they were pursuing the Trade Mentor route not because they wanted to be a Trade Mentor and help people but because they didn't want to lose access to their friends in the channel.

I keep hearing about this same issue. I don't understand why they don't just make a linkshell or discord for this purpose.I do think the requirements are a little on the easy side. I technically qualify for crafting mentor but I got no clue how anything works. ‾\_(ツ)_/‾

The idea is to make it so that at the very least there is a high chance you've experienced all those things. Having at least 1 80 out of each side with a certain amount of slightly deeper reqs (collectables) means there's a good chance this person has dedicated some time to the jobs. I don't think theres gonna be a lot of people who pay for those qualifications in turn ins or spend the time crafting/gathering 100's of useless collectables JUST for the crown.
the idea behind being a mentor is primarily that you're willing to volunteer time to help and are at least willing to "certify" yourself in that regard.
The reality is that people see the shiny crown and see a reward, not a responsibility.
WHERE IS THIS KETTLE EVERYONE KEEPS INTRODUCING ME TO?

To be completely clear, if you're taking advice as gospel, then you need to be told bad advice so you can learn not to take advice as gospel.
The crown doesn't mean that much. What it does mean to the cancel culture is "something I hate". For everyone else it just says "I did a certain amount of content and I'm letting you know", so maybe you might see some amount of reliability in them versus any other random player who might have zero experience.

They probably should just do another mentor requirement rework. Just add a global per-world trade chat channel that you can freely opt into, then both delete the crafter crown entirely and change the combat one to a watering can icon to go with the sprout.
Especially given that near-100% of all actual crafting mentor 'advice' is 'just use google for 'ffxiv current patch crafting macro'' they don't need to be in novice network or in contact with new players. That way they can lower the combat requirements back down, too. If anything the goal should just be to get people in there actually interested in helping, not just terrorizing the place with inane social linkshell banter.
People may complain about the useless banter in the NN but earlier tonight it turned into a blessing here on Lamia. New player was in the shroud and notice the weather condition was tension signaling odin was up. Not a single Hunt linkshell on lamia knew or even noticed the NN found it. Best of all most of the people who should up for the kill were NN mentors and novices. On a side note its been a year or more since I last ran into Odin so it was a welcomed and fun Kill for me.

Note: Taking advice from a players alt, is like taking advice from a voice in a dark room. Criticism is a two way street remember that!!

Very true. But I don't think this is a criticism of the person. You can help others regardless of having a crown, and that person may be a great person. But you have to do collectibles to get the crown. Not knowing what even those are speaks about the value of the crown itself.
