Does WoW have a faster pace than FFXIV?

I've heard that, due to the higher global cooldown, FFXIV feels slower for some people. However, I've played both FFXIV and WoW, and I find, barring the obviously faster classes, the gameplay generally feels faster in FFXIV. I'm not 100% sure why FFXIV feels faster, but if I had to guess I would assume it's the movement. I find this game has you dodging AOEs and boss mechanics more often, not to mention positionals. I just fought Storge with the Monk, and that was one of the more hectic fights I've experienced. Dodging it's AOEs while landing your positionals, and trying not to trip up your combo (that may just be me, as I don't know the rotation) took not a small amount of focus. At any rate, what do you guys think? Is WoW faster paced or FFXIV, and why?

It depends on the fight in question and how its designed, a lot of wow fights are on the slower end due to the mechanical vomit you have to deal with from bosses and adds, thats on top of CC(crowd controlling mobs) and planning out how you'd deal with a dungeon and your overall route for the run.

While WoW does have a faster GCD, the game is actually wants you to slow down and evaluate whats around you. FFXIV on the other hand is more geared towards fast pace fights with a slower GCD so you can make snap decisions within its fast paced dungeon crawling. The general idea is there, just inverted.

That being said WoW does have some fights that are more fast paced and requires a lot of movement and fast decision making. But they're few and far inbetween.

I never got the impression that WoW wants you to slow down, as most of the time your group wants to speed through a dungeon as fast as possible. Although, that can be said about any game that's been around for a while. I will say, however, that the dungeons do seem a little less linear in WoW.

WoW's encounters did generally feel slower to me, but it's partly because there's a lot more randomness you need to adjust to in its encounters then there is in the average XIV fight.

Mechanics don't always happen at the same times and they generally do not target specific roles either so you need to be mentally prepared for a lot more possibilities.

I feel like trash pulls feel faster in 14, and bosses felt waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay faster / smoother than 14's bosses do.

14 eliminated the third leg of the trinity though, theres no CC to speak of, so theres no designing trash pulls around trash pulls, and because of that, it hits for significantly less and can be ball-of-death'd

14's savage fights feel so ungodly slow compared to what most wow boss fights did

    Ex WoW player here.

TTK for mobs that are the same level as you is about the same in both games. However, WoW will always "feel" faster simply because when you push a button, that ability is IMMEDIATELY executed, and haste allows you to spam a lot more abilities. A lot of your abilities are off the GCD, so you are executing multiple abilities at once. In FFXIV, there is a delay for your ability to register and a 2.5 GCD, so it feels slower. For the most part, almost all of your abilities are on the GCD, so you are only pressing an ability every 2.5 seconds.

Can't comment on which class feels the fastest to play, because Blizzard keeps reworking every class every expansion even when nobody asked for a rework. Everyone played super fast in MoP, with Monks being insanely fast (hundreds of abilities going off a minute). WoD added more abilities to the GCD, so it felt a little slower. Legion reversed that and everything started going fast again (especially when you had a ton of artifact power later in the expansion). Demon Hunters approached MoP monk levels of fast. IDK about the current expansion, BFA, as I dropped it in January.

Within WoW you do want to go through fast after you know the layout, but day one and within mythic you will have to take it a tad bit slower.

It may sound weird but you want to be fast yet calculated, every move matters due to mythic keystone being timed and you get better rewards for being faster. But you don't want to go so fast as to make a mistake from not paying attention.

There are still some older dungeons you just can't speed through, they are long but also some of the more fun dungeons in WoW still such as dungeons from TBC, WotLK, Mop, etc.

This is also not factoring in environmental mechanics as well, bosses having certain requirements to be killed and special rewards being mixed in as well from quest lines. So one can say WoW, runs are far from linear.

I guess over all you want to be fast but also know when to slow down.

Dungeon pacing aside, Wow, doesn't have a server tick, it's client based so classes will always feel fast paced on top of the base GCD. But that is subjective due to the base GCD always feeling slow in comparison to faster classes like rogue, monk, hunter, druid, etc.

Isn't the usual trinity tank, healer and damage? Crowd control and buffs would be fourth and fifth legs. They are much harder to balance and accounting for them makes duty/dungeon finder much more complex, so they're rarely seen as separate roles.

The pace means very little to me. FFXIV devs provide more content with a speedy release schedule. That is what really matters. I am paying to play a game after all. Waiting a year for content is absurd.
