When do you complete the role quests?

I just completed the last quest in the Magical DPS role quest chain. However, I completed it before finishing the main story, with an ilvl 395 BLK no less. I want everyone's opinion on whether that was the right thing to do or not. As far as I can tell, the quest chain didn't make any reference to the main story content, but I'm not sure if the same can be said for the main story's possible references to this quest chain. I just want to know if I'll be missing out on anything if I complete the main quest before the role quests of vice versa.

You need to have completed at least one of them by around the point you get to the level 79-80 MSQ stretch, so you're in the right place to have done it.

If you're doing all 4 role quests (or more than one, at least), it might actually be better to complete them (whichever are applicable to you based on what jobs you think you'll level to 80) before you do the first level 80 dungeon as after that dungeon is the climax and conclusion and then you'll see something when you get back to Crystarium.

Also, note, I'm not saying you have to do all the role quests before finishing the 5.0 MSQ. It's just a nice continuity if you do all four. But if it's going to take some time for you to level multiple jobs, then might as well finish the MSQ first. You'll still get the idea when you see it.

All my jobs are always around the same level. At the very least, I have one of each role that can complete the quests.

The 5.1 MSQ has a few (very minor) additional dialog options if you've done the tank role quests, but that's about it.
