I agree that the split needed to happen as we were significantly large. The problem with only having the one DC was that a 50% split hurt us way more than NA losing 33% from each.

The problem is that the Euro population is too big for a single datacenter, but not quite big enough for two datacenters.
So the choice is between overloaded and unstable instance servers, or long queues due to lack of people. A classic no-win situation.

I don't get what this has to do with datacenter merge at all.

FFXIV team has been aiming for a mega server of shorts for a while now pretty much to make the game population proof without the need of server merges because of housing. The ability to use DF/PF with people from another DC of the same region is going to be a reality sooner or later.

18 million accounts not subs. A intentionally misleading stat.

Or they could invest in better server code. Other much smaller companies manage with mega servers.
